I haven't watched the show, but in the books you're definitely set up with the Starks as the natural protagonists.

They killed a dumb bitch and a dickhead.
The doggie was sad though.
Poor doggie.
The buildup to the Red Wedding and the crushing dread you can feel creeping in as Caetlyn figures out they are all going to die is so much more tense in the books. There was no real way to slowly drag that out in the show, so it comes across as somewhat less powerful. Plus its in the middle of book three, not some climactic final scene, which added a whole other element of WTF in the books.
The doggie
was sad though.
I didn't feel sorry for Robb or Caetlyn in the show, at all. It was crazy to watch it unfold, but I didn't feel for them like I did in the books. Book Robb was trying his best and fucked up. Show Robb was being a stupid child about a lot of things. One of the more subtle examples of this is when Robb cuts off Carstarks head - in the show, it takes him three swings and he gets all upset about it; in the book it's just one clean swing. Justice. Theon killing the guy in Winterfell (forget who) is the opposite - three swings and uncertainty in the books; one swing and hubris in the show.

It's that way in the show, more or less. They are introduced first, and Ned is portrayed as one of the only honorable characters. Everyone is supposed to identify with at least some of the Starks because they are the closest to traditional hero archetypes.

Yeah... in the show I don't like any of the Starks except for the little girl; she's spunky.
But it's like a car wreck for me I guess; just want to see some people kill/be killed and some titties along the way.
Like, I think I know the names of like 4 characters?
Hell, the midget's my favorite character and I don't know his name.
But that's pretty solid to put in the middle of the book, especially if they weren't twats. Then you're all "OHHHH SHITTT. Wonder who they'll kill as retaliation.

Yeah man. Arya (the little one) is very rad, indeed.

In the books Arya, Bran, Jaime, and Tyrion are my favourite characters. I really liked Ned also, but he's not in it that long. In the show though, just Tyrion and Jaime.

Jaime's the sister fucker?' He grew on me once he was captured by the giantess (she's enjoyable too).
I looked up who Bran is. Fuck that kid. So hard. But

His name's Bran.
Ah Tyrion, that's the midget. He's my island in a sea of hate.

I think the most interesting arch is Theon, but I don't really prefer any of the characters to each other -- I like all of it.

Bran was the one character in the whole series that I couldn't give an iota of a fuck-all about until he
reached the children of the forest and started getting into the hardcore greenseeing.
Favorite characters are/were probably Jaime, Tywin, Jorah, Arya and Oberyn

100%...
as a non-reader, the Starks are definitely the most sympathetic house. however i am also super fucking white, i have red hair, and i'm from "the north"
so of all the houses, without consciously considering my race etc, i pull for the starks. they are the "good guys" and aside from all the lannisters they kill, i cant really slight them for anything theyve ever done that i know of.
now, if you are breezing through the series watching it, and not really letting the characters "sink in" - like if you're just binge watching the show
then i can see how the characters would be rather undeveloped in your psyche
and something ike the red wedding might not mean a lot to you personally
also one of the detriments of game of thrones being such a vast study of different houses is that character development cannot help but suffer - therefore lessening the "give a shit" factor when the red wedding happens.
i have a great leather jacket thats over 10 years old. theres this stubborn hole in the lower back thats been sown and resownand always reopens.
at the risk of never getting laid in my jacket again, the hole shall be patched with a stark sigil patch. the king in the north.
