Have you guys seen this guys Starfire Build in the Luthiers forum? Pretty damn sexy I say, but the picture he posted of a different model (not the one he's building) makes me feel funny in the pants.

First I'm seeing this but I rarely venture into the Luthier's forum since most those guys are hacks.
That said this bass is pretty sexy. I prefer a plain top to tiger/flame/burl/quilt but the concept is awesome.

I don't ever go in to there lol, but starfires I think are really neat especially when Warwick came out with the Star Bass II a couple of years ago. The bubinga topped one is damn sexy. I just like this ones almost plain (except the tiger top of course) look to it. Very simple and clean looking.

Yeah the Warwick Star Bass I really dug on. I think the "Betty" would be cool if it were maybe finished in red or had a bloodwood top.
I lurked the Drake Basses website.
http://www.drakecustombass.com/
The instruments look competently constructed but the "Betty" (starfire) is the only one that really appeals to me.
On a side note the Drake Basses logo and the DHuff logo are eerily similar.

Not that it's a big deal to me and I'm sure it's unintentional, just sayin.

Hey, have any of you guys played a G&L L-2000/2500 Tribute? I've been thinking lately of giving one a shot. I know that over on TB, I've seen a couple say that they can be used for a really-poor-man's Wal tone. I'd specifically be looking at the 5er, but the tone is what I'm mostly asking about, so opinions on the 4-banger would be fine, too.

Can't comment on the Tribby L's but I had a Tribby JB-2 that was a great bass. Well constructed for Indo and I picked it up NOS for about 3 bills. I put them in the same league as MIM Standards. Had close to a P-Bass feeling neck with a Jazz PUP setup. Ultimately I traded it for a preamp that I needed so I could start playing in bands again.
I wouldn't think twice about jammin on a Tribby L series. I can see where they get the poor man's Wal tone comparisons. From my understanding those L PUP systems are hella versatile.

I would think that most active HH setups could probably get close to the poor-man-wal thing, but the layout of the pups on the l's is closer to a wal than say the HH Ray, which has the neck pickup way closer to the neck than the wal and the l's do.
But this isn't just about getting something that sounds like a wal. I just want something that sounds meatier and angrier than my Carvin, which has a pretty hi-fi polite tone.

I've actually been debating on a G&L as well. Maybe even a usa made one as a used one can be picked up for around 800.
My question is how close are they to a Stingray in terms of sound? I haven't played a G&L, but I've heard they get close. A stingray is pretty much THE sound that I love, but the G&L's seem a little more versatile in the tonal output.

Never played a Tribute. I've played a few G&Ls though
Sonically... I would list them as very aggressive with a lot of brightness but not thin, nothing like a Musicman, more upfront and maybe a little dryer. Actually ask MaxMaps, he has a Asat and they have the same electronics as a L-2000.Also ever listen to Helmet?
