a lot of wicks are like ship anchors though..

I don't mind heavy basses though. If it sounds good and play well, it can weigh 20 lbs and look like cat shit and I'll still be fine playing it.
Btw any of you guys play with a low B string on a four sting bass? As in BEAD? Or even tuned lower than that? I play with a lot of band kids, so a ska band to me would be fun and inevitable, and the low B (or maybe Bb) is a lot easier to play along tuba lines and such.

Yep, I'm currently using the .135 set of these for BEAD:
http://www.rotosound.com/drop_zone.phpI prefer nickel strings though. I HATED the way these sounded at first but they're much better for me now that the zing has worn off some. I also feel that the B could be a liiiiittle tighter, but it's not really a big deal.
Next time I'm going to try a set from Naked Strings.

I haz two like this but one is a 8 string tuned aA-dD-gG-cC half the time, I some times tune the "B" strings down to G. The four string I haz tuned BEAD haz a hipshot

Oddly both basses have a Dimarzio Model One up by the neck

when you have a bubinga body, wenge neck, rosewood fretboard on a corvette, even a 4 string, that shit is heavy but it sounds pretty damn good. BTW they dont make wenge necks anymore cause the factory workers were getting sick on the dust. if you see one cheap, snatch it up.
on topic of heavy basses. danelectro made a neck out of masonite. must be heavy. they are rare so I wouldn't know.

I remember wenge being very unfun to work with. Ibanez made some kickass basses in the early 90s that had wenge/padauk necks and padauk/mahogany/padauk bodies, things were sick. Never been into Warwick's neck shapes much but yeah they sound cool.

Dude,...I can attest to wenge being a pain in the ass. Splinter City.
Baseball bat neck profiles are a little bit of a pain but I've grown accustom to mine. Now if I play a shallower neck profile it feels,....off. Not unusable,....just different.
I'm not a specs and numbers kinda guy,...I will say that when I get my Huff/Zeller,...it will be different from the Warwick for sho. Being in two bands and playing and rehearsing often I could tell that the weight of the Warwick is taking a toll on my back. I'm also not getting any younger (fuck I sound like a TB fuddy duddy) so having a lighter bass will be nice.
FWIW My Wick has been my main player for 10 years now. I love it more than the day I bought it,...but I'mma have to retire it.
In other news,...the Darrin Huff made an appearance over there. He is always abreast of whats going on but feared that a visit to TB would destroy his motivation. That took a lot of guts for someone that has written off TB for over 2 years due to the venom that has been slung his way. He was very level headed and professional. I give him major props for taking that leap.

I've temporarily drop-tuned my Stiletto (strung w/Roto 77s, FWIW)at times, partly for certain Zeppelin songs (When The Levee Breaks, for one) that can be played with 'normal' tuning, but are easier on a B & E string setup. If/when I get a third bass, the Stiletto may be permanently tuned BEAD.

although I've never owned a wenge neck, I haver played them and I have worked with wenge wood in my own guitar projects. I still have a splinter in my finger to this day. but my impression of the warwick was that it was sanded and oiled properly with no signs of splinters being a problem. the wood actually felt great. like a rosewood neck almost. I dont think you can even paint wenge just like you cant paint rosewood. its naturally oily so nothing will stick unless you remove the natural oils but then you are just killing the wood.

Oh they are keeping at it. I don't think Darrin will be phased by it though. The people that have made up their minds about Darrin have made up their minds and are a lost cause. At this point they are nothing but trolls. I've been pretty passive aggressive myself with them but I'm done pandering to the peanut gallery.
@eyg,...oh yeah once you get wenge to the finish sanding stages and onto oiling it's fine. It's the resawing stages and initial thickness sanding.

Actually I think Darrin has just put a troll in his place (who will no doubt have a comeback). It's actually starting to get entertaining.

Remember what I said earlier about point-and-laugh? Some folks are determined to be righteously indignant...it's their right, dammit! It's the internet and we invented the internet, and don't you forget it!
Does the troll of the moment even have an outstanding order?
And I'd LOVE to have a Matchless-powered Moggie trike...just sayin'.
