Picks have their place absolutely for sure. If I ever need to play real aggressively and need a high mid bump then its pick all the way! I can't stand people that talk shit about another techniques. I don't care how long you grow your fucking fingernails, IT DOESN'T SOUND THE SAME.

My bass is too low to use a pick comfortably.

Picks are rad. One of my all time favourite bass tones is the dude from gojira. Awesome. I even liked Newstead's live tone a lot. It just feels like I'll be able to do more rad stuff with fingers - or that I should at least give myself the option.

Fuck.

So many good ideas and different approaches.

:thumb: you can also get good at palming your pick so you can do both on the same song :thumb:

Just ordered the Alex Webster book.

Dunno why I didn't think of seeing if he had something out myself - I guess I figured he was too busy talking Kierkergaard with Corpsegrinder to find the time to write a book. :idk:

I hate thick picks. That being said I have a bag of picks that I haven't touch in almost a year. I almost exclusively am a finger style player now. Don't know why either....

I'll play fingers if the song sounds better that way, but I'd say I play with a pick 80% of the time. I just like the aggressive sound a pick can give you, and I've never been able to replicate it with fingers, no matter what technique I try. And why bother expending a shitload of time learning techniques to replicate a pick sound, when I can just use a fucking pick?

Mudfuzz you're a goofball. Metronomes are the shit. I use one pretty much every day when treble guitaring.
I don't like them, this dude 'splanes it pretty good why.

I agree with Berlin almost 100%. If you're learning, then metronomes are exactly how he explained it.

Once you know the material, they can be useful to fine tune your timing. (still not a big fan though)

Metronomes may be useful if you're playing solo, but they're counter-productive to learning how to play with a human drummer. Time naturally drifts during a live performance and learning how to slide back in time with your band mates is huge. You can't just hammer away like a metronome, it's largely about feel
