After the Brad Richards sweepstakes.

So the Flyers signed Jagr of all people.

Also picked up Defensedudes Maxime Talbot and Andreas Lilja.

I liked Lilja with Anaheim as a 6 or 7th defenceman, he's nasty. So Versteeg is out to Florida for a 2nd and 3rd. Leino went to Buffalo. Flyers were rumored to be in on the Richards sweepstakes, though it seems to be down to NYR, Flames, Leafs and Kings. With the money being thrown around there should be an offer sheet to Stamkos or Doughty.

Ducks haven't made a signing or move of note. Selanne having knee surgery doesn't help that waiting game. If he comes back they'll be set as far as offense from their first 2 lines go, but what comes after that is the big issue. Need more depth guys there.

There's been whispering around Boston that they might make a move at Stamkos. We have 10 million available under the cap, so it wouldn't shock me. I'd love such an aggressive move, but it just seems so unlike the Bruins to do something like that.

It's at this point that I should point out that Talbot is a Centerdude not a Defensedude. I made a mistake in my previous post.

I'm excited for Bryzgalov and Jagr but we were just in the cup 2 seasons ago. I don't see why we have 10 players going elsewhere, even when Ed said there would be no shakeup after we lost to Boston. Mike Richards should have been a lifer, one of the best two way players in the league and short handed scorers in the league. I don't understand the move at all. Simmonds is an exciting player, excited about him. Going to be an interesting season for the flyers to say the least. Can't remember such an extreme shake up ever for the flyers.

Here's to hoping Jagr isn't another Paul Coffey or Adam Oates. Philly is known to be a place where greats come to die.

Starting to get excited for the new season. I had to hop onto a torrenting website in order to catch the season. Due to my schedule I'll be watching Flyers games about 3 hours after they wrap up and the cost prohibitiveness of Gamecenter Live,...as well as their lack of true DVR capabilities prevents me from signing on for the season. I'm just gonna have to be disciplined and avoid all hockey talk and visits to the Flyers site until after I catch the games. Not quite the same as watching live,...but it will suffice.

I caught a bit of the preseason for the Flyers but from what I saw,...they've got a pretty solid team. Even with the loss of Ritchie and Carts,...I'm liking what I'm seeing with Jagr,...someone who is hardworking, team oriented and prepared to duke it out in those dirty areas. I'm expecting Giroux to have a breakout year. That kid's got some serious skill and some sick hands. Second coming of Peter Forsberg I think. JVR is looking to become the next Eric Lindros (had Lindros not suffered multiple concussions throughout his career) type power forward.

Simmonds' tenure with the Flyers does not come without controversy,...having had a banana thrown at him during a shootout attempt,...followed by thge LGBT community get up in arms because they lip read Simmonds mouth "...Fucking Faggot" to Sean Avery (who no doubt ran his mouth to Simmonds,...and I would not be surprised if Avery used some racist remark). Other then that I think he racked up 4 goals in the preseason.

I saw promise from the Power Play which was horrible last year.

This team is a threat and I'm not too worried about the off season shake up. Of course that remains to be seen.

First game for Philly is at Bawston. See ya on Thursday BCBC.... :hobbes:

I'd be excited if the TV rights were settled. The NHL made the brilliant move of selling the European/Asian/African rights to some trust fund investment company. Which means ESPN America has to pony up more cash and is unwilling to do so. There's really not a lot of competition so ESPNA is seemingly content to leave their last offer on the table. I'm giving it this week before I cancel my subscription. Most of the responses to the one ESPN article touching on the subject are from people claiming to be doing the same. We'll see if that's the push ESPN needs, but I doubt it. The coverage has been great the past years, daily live game, CBC's Hockey Night in Canada (though I'm over Don Cherry and his suits) double header, usually double headers during the play-offs, and we even got the Draft (just the first round, but still). Going back to little snippets on the web? Fuck. I'm clinging to the rumour that the NHL's hockey network will make its way over incase no other deal is reached.

As for the Ducks this season. Teemu is back so they'll have 2 potent scoring lines. I like their defense with the veteran Lubo and Lydman, the younger and should be better Fowler and Sbisa, but Beauchemin was a pylon from what I saw last year. Giving up Lupul, who is decent enough provided he's healthy, and a first round prospect just seems like a bad deal. Hopefully he can get back to form. If Hiller is healthy they should make the play-offs. If they can get some prospects stepping up and not have to rely entirely on RPG/Selanne there's no reason they won't be competing for the Cup, but that's some big IFs.

Hellz yeah, man. I can't fucking wait for Thursday night. I mostly ignored the pre-season, as I do in every sport (just kinda a rule of mine). I hope Marchand has finally sobered up, and Seguin will start the season with his head in the right place. Those two, along with Rask, Krejci and Looch are the future of our team.

So sad that Savard isn't on your list man. It's looking like he is likely to have played his last pro game.

It seems as thought Shanahan is going to be very harsh as a disciplinarian and rightfully so. Sidney Crosby is looking to also be sitting out a majority of the season. While some people will call it the pussification, or the nerfization,....I think the league needs to continue their stance on hits to the head. Hockey will always be a dangerous sport,...but (and as much as I hate to admit this) the NHL can ill afford to loose guys like Crosby to concussion (I wonder if Crosby will ever be the same player he was prior to concussions,...sans all the diving and whining).

I was feeling pretty good last night so I forgot mention. Goaltending. It almost seems like the younger Bobrosvsky is gunning for the starting job. He had an excellent camp and looked a little sharper then Bryzgalov in the games I've seen. I think a little healthy competition between the two Russians will equal a beast goaltending duo. We now have not one but two capable goaltenders,....yeah I think the situation in goal has FINALLY been addressed.

The Flyers gave up a lot to get it,...but I think it was about time that Carter and Richards got split up. Those two have some maturing to do and I didn't see it happening with both of them on the same team in Philly. I wouldn't be surprised nor unhappy to see them both in Flyers uniforms in the future. I think the teams they went to are both lucky to have them and splitting the up is probably the best thing that will happen to those two in their careers.

It's looking like Matt Read and Sean Coulterier may have made the opening lineup. Will know more tomorrow as teams have to submit their opening lineups to the league. Matt Walker, Blair Betts and Oskars Bartulis have been placed on Waivers (no 2 way contracts I'm assuming,....will have to see if anyone claims them). Brayden Schenn, Erik Gustafsson, and Harry Zolnierczyk have all been sent back down to the Phantoms.

Puck drop tonight! This needs to be on the first page.

Watched some of the Shanahan discipline videos, great move by the NHL to give some insight into the decision making that goes on. No problem with them handing out suspensions already either.

Betts was picked up the Canadiens. Surprised that Schenn didn't stick around, he was the big catch in the Richards trade. Or did they send him down because of that?

Flyers dumped a bunch of guys to waivers (Note that Avery also went to waivers and went unclaimed,...I guess no one wanted "Sloppy Seconds". That Knucklehead needs to go away) and sent Schenn down which significantly lowered his cap hit. I'm not sure of the details but apparently even if he plays every single game for the Flyers he won't make as much as he would had been on the opening roster.
Intersting info from CapGeek

NHL Flyers Brayden Schenn is only eligible for $1.405m in B bonuses if he spends every day on the Flyers' roster and appears in 82 games.

That means Brayden Schenn's cap hit should drop from $3.11m to $1.705m after just one day in the minors.

Note, that clause is only believed to apply to Schenn's contract in 2011-12, not the other two seasons.

So, since he's currently assigned to the AHL roster during the Flyers' NHL season opener, Holmgren jsut shaved a ton (the $1.405m) off the cap number for this season.

And with the waiver moves from yesterday (Betts, Walker, and Bartulis), is something in the air with the Flyers for a sudden move? They've got a lot of space now to make a move.

From Holmgren: "It gives us flexibility, more than anything," Holmgren said. "There are certain things I can't tell you. I'm not trying to be cryptic or anything. But we'll just leave it at that."
Avery wasn't unexpected, not the Torts type and with the Rangers actually developing their own players now he was expendable. I do like Avery, he can be good and it's funny how many peoples' panties he gets in a bunch, the fall out over sloppy seconds was far more hilarious than his comments. But he doesn't have much value unless you're desperate for depth around the deadline. At least he's cashed in the past few years, 3.8m per, ouch.

Those rookie contracts are wacked. Schenn should fire his agent over that clause. Reminds me of the Blackhawks who called up one of their players on game day, then send him right back down to call him up again on the next game day. Apparently that saved them a few k per day against the cap.
