Splurged the other day. Fun shit, for an ehx product, not too bad. Also the BBOD is pretty nice. I think I may try to integrate both into the big board. The B9 is probably a little more apt for the application I've been using my octaver for.

So I made my weekly round to Guitar Center (really don't know why I keep going). ANYWAY. While there I was shocked to find they had two Rics for sale. I've never seen one in a GC and was amazing. So I had to try one. I've only played one Ric when I was 16 and honestly, can't remember much about it. So I picked the black one to try out, both are new models btw, plug it in and wow. I did not not like it at all. hahaha. I was so underwhelmed I couldn't believe it. The neck on this thing was one of the worst playing necks I've ever used. It felt like I was trying to play on a 2x4. It was thick and awkward. To top it off that damn pickup guard metal crap they put on them made it incredibly uncomfortable to play. I gave it 10 minutes and told the guy how disappointed I was, which surprised him.

It's so weird. I had before that, picked up a Squire Jaguar bass and could not believe how well it play and was set up. No dead spots. Lots of harmonics. Played just like a thousand dollar bass, I mean not as good as my MTD, but pretty damn good. It was 200 bucks, the Ric was 1800.

I now have a bad taste in my mouth. I know Bigchief plays a Ric, other than him, has anyone else loved them when playing them? Am I crazy??? I mean I know it's all subjective of course. I'm just curious. I was so excited to try own and feel so let down.

i've played them and not really been into them, but the Dinger has given me really specific tastes for how a bass should feel.

but i'm a complete git about basses so..... IGNORE ME.

I mean honestly, I would love to own a Dingwall again. I know I talk shit, but it's mostly just to talk shit. :) I can understand why you'd love that sucker. Especially when playing a 5 or 6 string. So much more comfy. The only thing I didn't like about the Dingwall is the preamp just seemed to lack the balls I like from my basses. But I like fucking Bongo's for God's sake, so what do I know. hahahaha

Well Mudfuzz is like the Ric master, and there are a few other guys here that have one.

For me, the boner for Rics isn't about how they feel/play. It's solely about the tone. I've never heard any other bass do a really convincing Ric tone. I know people say Peavey T-40s do, but not really. I'll readily admit the Ric isn't the most comfortable bass to play, and I agree with you about the metal pickup bezel being a pain in the butt. But the way the thing sounds makes it all worth it to me. I don't really care about feel/comfort when I'm playing, as long as it sounds good.

If it is a new RIC then I can understand why you might not have liked it, I haven't liked any of the new ones I've played…. All mine ore over 30 years old and I think BCBC's is as well.. For me I love how they play as much as they sound, my burgundyglow one is to me the easiest 4 stringer to play I've ever owned, even with the hand rest/pickupcover on :p and I love the sounds I get, and I go for a ver different sound than BC, I used flat wound strings and cut a lot of highs when not using a dirty sound, I love that rubbery, bouncy sound AND I love being able to kick on a pedal and hit the bridge pickup and go all Lemmy on everyone :thumb: Also they work whith dirt pedal better than most basses :idk: If I could afford a 5 string one I'd get it in a second too… sadly collectability….

I love Ric's, but like Mudfuzz, I've only played vintage models (though they weren't vintage when I played them). I've heard a lot of people say the new versions can't compete with the old ones. My 1st bass was a Kay Ric 4001 copy, the neck profile was pretty close to a real Ric, so I got used to that type of slim neck. After a short run with a Gibson Grabber, I got a new Ric 4003 and never looked back. They actually ruined P-basses for me because of the necks. The only other necks I really like are MIJ Jazz necks, which is what I have on my other bass, a 90's MIJ Jag bass. I've tried a lot of basses since then and none come close to the Ric for me.

I only tried playing a Ric once, and it was just too big for my body. If they made a short scale 4003, I would be all over that shit. Love the tone and the look.

But it is not made for small people.

Yeah, mine's a '76, so it's got a slimmer neck too. The hardest part for me was getting used to the non-contoured body. Being primarily a pick player, I found my forearm getting rubbed raw the first few times I played for longer than a half hour or so. I had to learn to hold my picking arm out from my body a bit so that it doesn't rub against the binding.

I wish there was a way to try out a vintage Ric. The one I had played with a was young was from the 70's. My buddy had traded his Stringray in plus money for it at some music shop. Remember when those still existed? LOL. Maybe I'll get to try one some day. :)
