I've got a very old player piano my parents used to own. I still use it for playing and recording various ragtime jigs etc. to incorportate with my music in subtle ways. now i'm thinking it would be cool to somehow synch it with my synth/electornics. and look at all them music reels he has stacked on top...man it must be great being his grandkid. i've got some crazy crazy reels, early "coon" tunes they say on them, and other racist fare that must have been popular back in the 20s? still a cool unit.....now that guy, he's crazy. crazy awesome

Can you run the paper upside down or backwards to have the piano play the different notes and or backward.

not technically......there are different fittings for each end on the roll so that you can't put it in wrong. but maybe there is a simple two wires flipped on the motor that would make is run in reverse. I wouldn't want to unwind a roll and try to rewind backwards/upside down, the paper is OLD and pretty delicate and i imagine might mess with the existing holes? good idea though.
edit: would be cool to add a rheostat to attenuate the speed of the motor.

Can't you get the same effect after you record it by just speeding up or slowing down the recording?

Well knowing I only record to tape, there are ways to get the desired effect of say, the piano roll just slows down at an even pace till its barely turning and sounds like a record playing at the wrong speed. but that video made me think..in a jokey kinda way...how cool it would be to synch my synth gear with the player. and that got me to thinking about the rheostat to control the motor. would be an easy mod too, i'm assuming. then we can just record the player and manipulate in real time.
