yeah J pickups on their own are a bit meh, but a P pickup on full with a little bit of the J pickup thrown in can sound pretty good. Especially when played with the fingers.

That's what the tone knob is for! What I'd like is to build a kit Musicmaster bass but there are no options.. I wonder why.. maybe it's because I'm the only one who wants to build a kit Musicmaster. I love my Bronco but the MMs I've tried are neck divey. So starting from scratch, maybe one of those roasted maple necks and lightweight tuners to bring the weight down on that end..

Wow. That Tele bass is like the perfect bass. If your decision making becomes clouded and you somehow decide that you don't like it, I want it. So much.

Love the Tele bass. Mine is a bit older and has the little single coil pu.
Great sounding bass. How's the mudbucker in that one?

This thing's been played and had a hard life for sure. Took me a couple of hours to get it set up halfway decent -- the neck looked like a banana but I've straightened it out and polished the frets. Bridge pu was in the gigbag with no wires attached and replaced by an Artec that was wired out of phase with the neck pu. Fixed all that, cleaned the pots, and as soon as I can find my drill I'm going to replace all the pots with decent CTS ones (the holes are for those tiny Jp pots) and the cap with a nice PiO.
It's missing the pickguard, but I think it kinda looks cool the way it is.
The neck was absolutely filthy and had a serious bow to it when I got it, but luckily the truss rod seems to be in good shape and I managed to straighten it out. Cleaned and oiled the board.
It's such a good sounding bass, very lightweight and resonant. With a good setup, it's awesome and cost less than 1/10th of the vintage 64 Fender Jazz I was looking at too.
I likes it.

I've got two basses at the moment (and I used to own LOTS
)
Both built myself, the first has J and P pickups and a John East preamp.
the second has a Musicman Bongo pickup and a John East preamp.

Nice! How's the John East pre and what controls are on those? I've heard great things about them but never got to try one.

I like them a lot, very versatile.
The natural finished one has (from right to left) vol / treble boost and cut on top of bass boost and cut / mids boost and cut on top of mids sweep. The switch turns the preamp off and when off it will still work if the battery goes down.
The black one has volume over a balance control that sweeps between the J pickups and the P pickup (with both on in the middle / a balance control between the neck and bridge J pickups (with both on in the middle) and tone controls which are the same as the other bass.
There's an on/off switch as above and a second switch which automatically centres the balance control that's under the vol.
I usually start with the tone controls centred and adjust to suit the room or occasionally for a particular song

Sounds like a good set of controls on both of those.
I'm just getting used to using an active bass and I'm using the tone controls the same way, centre by default. It's really useful being able to do more than just cut treble like on a passive tone knob.
