I think tube vs solid state in general is a silly argument. amps are amps. just different technology that behaves differently to reach the same thing. they are both great in their own way. I have seen the light and it is amps

The appeal of tube amps to me is the natural overdrive and compression. And they usually don't have too many extra features. I like simple amps, which is hard to find in a lot of solid state designs.
Of course price, weight, and size are the downsides of tube amps.
And a good solid state design (like the Rusty Box plus power amp) works as well as a cheap tuber.
Which speaking of the ol' RB, it worked wonderfully for my show last weekend. Aside from a hum (probably the power supply), it sounded so much better than my amp's pre.

Solid State amps are super rad unless you're me and you want to use distortion and fuzz. I've never heard an SS amp that took to my board the way I liked it.

I love my GK 1001RB, but clipping the front end of that makes me cringe... the equivalent of an aural prostate exam.

This is the worst sound in the world. I had a Hartke that did the same thing. And if I didn't turn my bass's volume down, my friend's GK head clipped on EVERY CLEAN NOTE WHAT ARE YOU DOIIINNGGGG
I use a 70's SS PV head and while it isn't my ideal basstoan, my favorite part about it is that I can hit it with a Blowing Up and it'll just sound awesome instead of like capacitors farting into each others' dicks.

Whenever I use the GK, I turn the internal trim pot on my basses all the way down. The clipping on mine isn't nearly as bad as what you're describing... I'd have that checked out.
How high are you setting the input volume?

Yeah, after a while I did consider that something was wrong with his head. I was using not-super-hot passive pickups and if I didn't turn down at least halfway it'd clip on like 90% of notes with the input volume set pretty low...needless to say, pedlols had no chance.

That's the GK for you. A compressor can help but not solve the issue.

spammy spam....
I just recorded this new one and it's a perfect example of a pedal that needs at least a tube pre or all tube amp. This thing PUMMELS.

As for my own experience, I'll say that my Genz Benz sounded awful when the input clipped, my old Peavey Mark VI sounded less shitty. But still nowhere near as nice as doing that to either my Bugera or my Marshall JTM.

So bought a new cheapie bass to advertise my pickguard that I made. It's pretty fucking sweet too for less than 300 bucks new! Pickguards not on yet as it's still drying.
