Those fucking frets scare me, because I'm a fucking caveman. All I want to do is replace my G&L with a Wal someday and then between the Wal and my Ricky, that's all I could ever imagine needing tone-wise. Dat will be it 4 lifez yo. I want nothing more.

I was thinking about this the other day, in some other thread.

One day I'll change my G&L for a Wal, and maybe one day upgrade my Bugera for a vintage Superbass. And that might quite literally be it, for my bass rig. I'm sure I'd go for modular after that, but that's more or less IT for my bass, amp and pedal GAS. I'm not sure if that should make me happy or sad.

More people need to try a Roscoe or MTD. God damn it they are awesome. Seriously!!! I love Roscoe so hard. I'm planning on getting another one as soon as money comes in. Ugh. So good.

I can't explain why, but Roscoe's and MTD look TOO booteek for me. Wal's just seem more normal-ish looking, I think. Keep in mind that I'm not talking about a Wal with some fancy ass quilted burled top or something. Just plain walnut probably.

I have. I hate MTD's necks and I don't gel well with Roscoe either. It's not that I hate on " boot-eek" basses really other then they look ugly 85% of the time, I've play one or two that weren't bad instruments but one of them have blown me away.

God I'm soooooooooo into the look now of the booteek basses. I LOVE IT! Most that I've played are amazing too. That Mike Browne was a fantastic bass and probably as boutique as it gets.

I want a burl topped Roscoe so bad it hurts. I know it'll sound good too because I've owned 2 (or 3...this is getting bad) Roscoe's now.

Muddy, I'm not surprised you don't dig those. You're into something totally different sonically probably than I am. To me the necks of the Roscoe especially and the MTD are the best and fastest/smoothest necks I've played on. I'm really glad Excane sold me on that sucker. I don't intend on flipping it ever. That's why I have two basses. Ones a keeper, ones a "I might try something else" bass.

I wouldn't say no, because a Wal is gonna sound like a Wal, abd the sound is 150000x more important to me than looks. I love my Ric for the sound, not the looks, and the reason I want a Wal is the same.

But if I had my druthers, I'd definitely want a less-fancy looking Wal, yes. That fancy wood coffee table look definitely is not my thing.

And really one of the reasons you see it so much is it is MUCH easier to laminate exotic woods and use a simple finish then what you see on factory made instruments just from a tooling and faculties angle. That's why my bass looks like a lot of high end basses… natural wood that looks cool is easy.. spraying 15 coats of lacquer is not unless you are set up to do so.

Its because they look really booteek ;)

I like the look of MTD's a lot, but for some reason they sound like poop in my hands.

I've played some great Roscoes and some less great ones. The ash body ones sound great to me and the Spanish Cedar ones were very lifeless sounding.

I personally couldn't ever play those higher-end, boutique basses.

First of all just because it would have to be shortscale and that's not very common.
Second, I have no love for exotic wood or basses without a pickguard.
Third, they usually sound a lot more aggressive than I need. I like a dark bass with lower output.

Maybe I'm just a luddite and want something that can be dinged up without feeling bad. Pristine things make me uncomfortable.
I guess I am a bit like Behndy since I found that shortscale Fenders are just right for me.

Speaking of which...

This fella is just in. Will probably have to find a new pickup for it at some point so it can keep up with my Mustang. But it's good and gnarly and :omg:

I agree a lot! I too think MTDs look great! and… this fucking sound!

that's why I was disappointed by the neck.. The one I got to play even had chromes on it  Looks though I think Dingwall and Zon are tits! sadly I haven't played a Dingwall yet.. playing wise I like Zon and Alembic. The thing I don't like most about most high end basses is they mostly come off as bland or too even or flat sounding for me. While I love sustain and punch I NEED a bass that has for better lack of a word "bounce", where the note swells a bit after you hit it verse just rings out, and some designs and pickups just bring that out more [it a natural thing on acoustic instruments] and the way you hit a string and a setup of light stings and higher action will help. For me RICs, OLD fenders [and non of the booteek fender clones I've played are good at this] MM and Lakeland do this on the norm where every other one you find is just luck of the draw.

it's pretty awesome. it's a quick short read, sorta cyber punkish but angry and violent. stuff like this and Ellis's Crooked Little Vein are just such.... i dunno. mood reads? that i like to go back to them over and over. it was like a buck on Kindle Amazon when i got it too.

GreyGrey - yah. i feel you on the OH GAWD BE CAREFUL way too expensive basses. would freak me out and i don't want to care.

i'm actually... a little bummed i haven't put but one small ding in mines. that and some scratching where i finger are all the cosmetic Awesome Touches so far. durn it.
