can I post my modular jams in here? pretty sure I'll be going down the route of sampling/processing madness unsure if I want a radiomusic or disting mk4 for sample playing..

sampled a tropical relaxation track on youtube as well as a tad bit of Reckoner with the phonogene. envelope and lfo on grain size/direction. scooper is playing some lounge track sample with it's own automation going on and I used DMC peaks drums on an overdub

so, because i'm still totes learning all the basics, and Maths just..... intimidates the BALL POUCHES off of me.... i'm thinking of swapping the Quadra and Maths i'd planned on getting for a Doepfer A-143-1. looks like it covers a lot of the same ground, but simpler?

lol. annnnnnd saves me like 5 hundy because i found a used 'un for 150. so. more loot sooner is GOOD.

behndy, that Doepfer might be a good substitute for Quadra, but not so great at replacing Maths, in fact Maths is very hard to beat space/cost wise. At any rate it is best to think of Maths as a CV processor that also can make envelopes. Whereas Quadra and the a-143-1 are more like regulat envelope generators, each with some different features. With that said Maths is a great piece of gear since it does envelopes in a pinch but also does cv mixing attenuverting slewing comparator-ing or-ing. If you *only* need AD envelopes you don't need Maths, but if you might need Maths other functions it is an economical way to get envelopes plus the other stuff.

And, behndy, I agree with Dark Barn on the A143-1. Definitely a good substitute for the Quadra, but Maths does have a few extra things in there that the A143-1 won't be able to do. You can get some of those things with a Samara though. You still wouldn't have CV control over the envelope, which can be really fun (as least, I don't think so. Maybe I just didn't see it in the A143-1?)

My second time listening to this and its even better than the first. I like how this piece loosely reminds me of Tim Hecker's music, being thay that it's incredibly rhythmic music that remains diffuse. But this has a completely different aesthetic and feel that I haven't really heard put together before.

That's basically (wogglebug excepted) a classic substractive mono voice. What do you want this to do with this that a fixed architecture couldn't do ?

Looking for novel sequencing of interesting oscillators. Clocking Rene with Wogglebug causes many chaos.

My recommendation would be to get modules that can perform several functions. The simplest example is an LFO that also works as an audio frequency oscillator and tracks 1V/oct. Or the opposite, an oscillator that works well in low frequencies range. Extending that, an envelope that can loop and thus works as an LFO or even an audio oscillator (through probably not with perfect tracking). Most filters can be nice sine wave oscillators when self-oscillating at max resonance, etc.

So, for a bit more money but not that much I'd probably want to replace the A145 and A140 with modules that can perform several functions. Like a slope generator (A171-2, Function, Minislew, etc.) and an oscillator that works well as an LFO for example (Dixie, etc.). You would also benefit from some more sound mangling in there, either a multimode filter (the Bastl Cinnamon is my recommendation for this, small, cheap, fully featured, full of character and works nicely as an oscillator too) or a wavefolder (Tiptop Fold, WMD/SSF Ultrafold, etc.).

You could also replace the mixer and the VCA and use a multiple VCA module with built-in mixing (though mixers are useful for many other things so getting another small one would be useful).

The point is, you should be able to easily do something else than your basic substractive voice, and being able to do something else with many modules is a great way to try new things.

it will be a hinute, a sampler player is going to be the last thing for this rackj i grab i think, but i'm torn between the Phongene, Nebulae and Tyme Sefari.

the Nebulae is pretty much out of the running because it's pre loaded samples. i want to be able to record silly bits as i go.

so...... Phonogene vs Tyme Sefri? thoughts? love? hate? meowph?

What do you want to do with it ? Play recorded samples and/or record new ones ? Do you need pitch adustments or to change the start point/etc. ? Do you need one player or several ?

Another contender for the "big module" category is the upcoming Audio Damage Enso, which is a looper with several modes :
Clocked Looper: a tempo-synced looping mode, for easy manipulation of the stereo buss.
Tape Looper: emulates an analog tape loop for "Frippertronics" style looping.
Sample Player: a simple stereo sampler and sample playback mode, with slicing/chopping.
Replicant: a modular of the popular Audio Damage Replicant plug-in.
Glitch Mode: buffer mangling with a vengeance

I'm very probably going to get one of these later this year.

A small but good option seems to be the TipTop One.
Another cool but different small option is the MusicThing RadioMusic, which uses a different paradigm (all the tracks run in parallel and you switch between them) but can be used for other things with reset/etc. If you want to trigger drums/etc. with accurate timing the One is a better solution as it's designed for this. RadioMusic is awesome for other applications though.
