Anyone got a favorite?
My favorite is my Orange AD200B, just sounds right, handles pedals great, has a full-round sound. I seriously haven't desired an other amp since I got it, GAS gone, although another cab....
Buy a used one because they are so expensive new.

Also I agree with waiting a bit to make that decision unless you are just really like fuck a fiver.

On the real, like, I only used two 70's solid state amps for around three straight years. Then, started buying tube amps...and man.

It's not to say SS is worse. But, god damn, sometimes it just sounds especially nice for what I'm trying to do. Like, it's this weird, hard to define depth. It's rad.

FUCKING RAAAAAAAAD

I get that tube amps have that mojo because they are heavy and sound heavy and are just all around awesome. That being said: I've been seriously gigging for years with all solid state heads, recently a fuckin Fender Rumble 350 because its like 5lbs and was super cheap at the music store where I teach. I've never, Ever, EVER had someone come up to me and say "man if only you had a tube head". I get that tubes are cool and I'll own one someday, but I firmly believe that good playing through an amp that is loud enough for the venue is all that you need.

jia jia. i use loud as butts rigs because half the shows we play there's no front of house, but.... y'know.... fuck toobz. TOO HEAVY. TOO MUCH MAINTENANCE. GIMME THAT EASY BUTT.

is that Miley? i don't know shits about pop culture any more. but watching that.... who the fuck WANTS to be that person? never mind the silly cover and the staged head banging... but all alone, rest of band invisible?

i would rather dip my peen into a woman that douches with with Minutes From Hatching spider eggs and has tits made out of cotton balls.

...... i can't touch cotton balls. thems FREAKY.

You guys are totally right. I wait...2 days. Hahahaha!!!!!!!!! :)

The two basses are so tonally different I could easily justify keeping both. The Roscoe has a darker and growlier tone and the MTD has more clarity but is still like "fuck yo face bitch!". Both play really nice. I sell both and buy Wal now? ;)

Totally agree that no one ever told me that when I played solid state. No one ever mentioned anything like that. However, when I DID switch all-tube, I started to get a lot more comments about my sound. Keep in mind though, that it was a big sonic change for me, because I went from sparkling clean SS heads to a 100W all-tube cranked up to overdrive city. I almost always run my amp high enough that it's distorting. And it sounds loads better than any OD pedal I've ever heard. That's really the only reason I moved to tubes, I could never find an OD sound I liked.

My amp is pretty heavy (about 45 pounds), but I can still carry it with one hand. I haven't done jack shit to it for maintenance. The "maintenance" thing with modern tube amps is completely overblown. I've never retubed it, I've never checked its bias and I've never even had a tech look at it. Fuckin whatever. It sounds good, and if it starts sounding bad, that's when I'll take it to a tech.

LIED. ALL LIES.

lol. i've never owned one, so i only know anecdotally, but i've heard stories about having to retube every so often of busting a toob in transit. i just love the Rusty -> power amp setup so much i've never wanted to deal with any possible extra stuff over a SS power amp. Fuck Toobz is just jokes though. Fuck Toobz For Me? I Fuck Toobz? I Gotsta Get My Peen Retoobed?

MY AMP WEIGHS 7 LBS. IN IT'S RACK. I CAN CARRY MY BASS ON MY BACK THEN AMP AND PEDALBOARD IN ONE TRIP RARRRRRRRRR FUCKERSSSSS-which doesn't mean anything 'cause there's a 2x12 and a pair of 1x12's and keyboard board and a keyboard stand as well to grab. but still. light is GOOD.

oh fuck ME have you ever had one of those stretches where you must have slept in a fetal position or something uncomfy all night and when you stretch out for the first time of the day it's so awesome that everything goes a bit fuzzy and greyish white and all sounds around you sound like they're bouncing down a long metallic tunnel at you?

fucking LOVE those stretches. gimmmmmeeeeeee.

I love those stretches. They always make me feel like I'm JUST about to pass out, then everything comes back into focus.

Tubes make distortion sound like a billion times better.
