Getting a new amp tempts me but I don't have a band, no one in MPLs wants to play black or doom metal and I live in a townhouse.

Seems going direct might be a better investment and make things easier for me

Hahaha thanks! I was originally gonna put a humbucker back in the neck, but then I broke the pickup ring and said fuck it, I didn't need it anyways and taped it up haha

I usually have an aversion to gold guitars, but yours appears to be an example of doing it right.

Gold hardware on guitars, however...not a chance of looking anything but tacky.

It's pretty good for guitar but you can't get any chimey cleans if you were to want them. It gives a nice meaty sound though

So I was out and about on a mission to try out amps. I came across this here USA Gibson Gothic for $300 at Guitar Center.

Put that bish on Layaway.



It's slutty. I bet it has some stories to tell. Probably someone's road guitar. Someone tried to recess some strap locks in it. It has a headstock repair; so it was likely smashed. The pickups don't appear to be original. I believe it to be the Gothic Morte which according to Gibson had Active pickups in it. Those were uncovered pickups and as you can see these are black chrome covered. The control cavity cover is laid out in such a way that causes me to believe that it has room for a 9volt. So it had at one point or still has actives in it,...but I didn't check. Doesn't really matter. If I want to gut it and put passives in it; that won't be too hard to do.

I played it through the OR15 that is in the background; through an Acoustic 4x12. The cab sucked but the amp had the sound I was looking for. I may just wind up going with an OR15 over some of the more powerful Oranges I was researching.

I noticed one of the frets lifting out but that was about it. Neck is straight and the repair appears to be competently done. If not; I know people who could use my business.

Could use a set of strings. As you can see someone who didn't know what they were doing tried to restring the guitar.

It really just needs a loving home; I think I can arrange that.

And dat OR15. Since I don't currently gig; and really just want to write and record at home and provide music for future projects; I feel like that is all the amp I could ever need. Gonna git one eventually and pair it up with an Avatar Traditional G112. Undetermined if I wanna go with Greenbacks or V30s or Hellatone 30s (which is a Celestion G12H30 that has been put through it's paces) or perhaps even and Alnico Blue that is closer to the wattage rating of the amp.

I feel like any bigger of a cab is just gonna be too loud for at home use.

Could be, if loudness is an issue I wouldn't go for an Alnico Blue though, since they're very efficient speakers, a Greenback will be substantially softer in volume.

Also, I don't know whether the cab you're looking at is an open or closed back as Alnico Blue's don't sound great in closed back cabs, that could be another reason not to go for those other than the higher price offcourse.

I also have a lead on an nicely built homemade isolated cab for under $200. I cannot recall what's in it though. Two speakers; one of which may be a V30. No mics but I got mics.

Open-back for home use in a 2x12 or 1x12, IMO, especially with low wattage amps like the OR15. Closed-back for stage use with 2x12's or 4x12's and loud amps. Closed-back at home can be too directional. Open-back allows for smoother dispersal of sound and low-end, thus decreasing the likelihood of that infamous 'thud' when you have neighbours nearby or a slightly unsupportive wife. Just my experience.

Good advice for sure.

I def prefer an open-back at home and at lower volume or with lower wattage amps. Low end starts to get away real fast when I turn up with a bigger amp so that's where I prefer closed-back, always. If I only owned a single cab tho, it would def be closed. Or built with a removable back section.
