I'm with you on that. I'm really taking a close look at the beatstep pro. So, definitely excited to see what you do with it and the sv-1

I've been eyeing up the Qu-Bit Octone for a little sequencer for my little setup. Looks dreamy. Individual gates out, the forward-reverse mode, buttons, quantising options, ratchet mode giving repeat steps... Does a hell of a lot for the size. Going to get it unless there's a great reason not to once some money I'm waiting on comes in.

That thing is very underrated. Does a ton for its price/size...the big issue is that the knobs are small and fiddly, hard to get to.

I'm thinking very hard about picking up a lifeforms SV1. Going to Sequence via Reaktor and slowly work it into a bigger system. Here in AUS I can get a Lifeforms Black box shipped for $910, while a single mono voice built from modules I can get my hands on locally would run me about $2.5k. Massive difference.

Just wondering what's the best way to get Audio out of it. Is it as simple as just buying a 3.5mm to 1/4" lead? Just to tide me over before I buy a dedicated 1/4" I/O module.

If you plug it in a mixer then adjust the gain on that channel (not volume, the gain knob usually on top) and you should be fine. Otherwise you'll need something else to attenuate the signal.

I was just going to go Lifeforms 3.5mm mono out to 1/4" Audio interface input into Ableton. Same basic principle or does it require further attenuation? I'm not plugging it into any form of amplification device atm

That depends the headroom of your interface then...

But I checked and the SV1 has a line output so you won't need to do anything specific, just use that one.
Other outputs (individual osc outs, etc.) would require attenuation though

Oh yeah I knew that much, I just wanted to make sure that all it would take for me to get going right away would be a cable with a little jack and a big jack ha, Should be all G then. Thanks a bunch. This is something I've been contemplating for at least 12 months now and I'm keen to get cracking.

Thinking in terms of linear steps can be limiting though (I used to.always want the giant 64 step multi sequence sequencers...I don't got the patience it turns out haha). Two sequences with an adder/transposer or an arp can make it seem more complex (and less tedious than programming 32 to me especially with limited or no presets/memory).

Trigger delays/gate mangling, bursts, logic, and probability can make a limited number of steps have a ton of depth. I feel like I do pretty well with just an 8step trigger sequence, logic, and some outside arp, sequencing. Been rolling with a semi randomized sequencer (microbe meta) and quantitizer and have been perfectly happy (combined with my trigger stuff).

Seeing what the music easel people do with an arp and a 5 step sequence is pretty cool.

Like a 5 step long trigger sequence with an 8 step note sequence will give you a kinda 40 step sequence or something (sq-1 is good at this). And you have an extra 5 steps of quantized CV values to use as like a stepped lfo.

I feel you on that.. thanks for droppin the knowledge like always. if there was a way to modulate the timing or really anything on the sq1 I would totally hop on that.

yep that cable would work fine. I use the same thing when I run into my pedals. normally just an aux cable tho. but yeah be wary if you plug anything direct (like the osc) they are fucking LOUD!!! enjoy it's a beautiful sounding mono synth (you can apparently make it dual but I haven't figured that out yet)
