When my GFs American family visited we talked about taxes, and it turns out we don't pay that much more than them in taxes, we just get something in return for it.

We have a higher marginal tax rate... but we also have socialism which makes those progressive. We really have it all

As DD points out, we have a progressive tax system. GFs aunt was a nurse. We did math, as you would pay a couple of percent more and get free education, free healthcare and all that jazz if she was a nurse in Norway instead. This was like five years ago, so the details aren't crystal clear to me anymore. Feel free to do the math yourself.

You mean private taxes, like tuition or health insurance are gratuitously high outside of our lands of welfare?

Pretty much. Relative to other countries the US spends a substantially larger portion of overall tax revenue on military garbage. If the US put more of that towards social welfare programs they'd look a lot more like Europe.

The US spends more than 50% more than the UK as proportion of GDP on healthcare, and people go bankrupt paying their bills and the infant mortality rate is higher than ours.
But "socialism" is inefficient.

We also spend close to $600 billion on military per year. 2nd place is china at $215 billion per year. Fucking bonkers stupid. Trump wants to increase it.

Also I in no way mean to suggest that the UK spends enough on healthcare right now. But imagine how great it could be with 50% more money!!

I could make a joke, but I'd make some enemies if I did it.
