I guess this one (second half) is it self oscillating the balanced modulation and frequency shifting itself....he says the 285e is the sole source in the first half.
Dang amazing stuff.
I'm not sure these are the vactrol based units though...still gotta look into that.
Edit: I don't think the 285e is vactrol based...but here is some information on the 208 music easel vactrol balanced Modulator:
