we had our own lap steel king in sweden. i'm pretty sure he's the only recognized player of lap steel and sadly mostly a matter of ridicule.

That harmony has the original pickup ring, right? Could get an aftermarket for it or something. Curtis Novak makes that one, right?
The supro is pretty tempting even though it's pricy. I vaguely remember someone claiming they're flimsy?

it must have had some currency in West Germany because Framus made lap steels.

That's not the original pickup ring. It's a modern humbucker-sized ring. (I think the original pickup was probably a Gibson p13.)
The listing says it's got a humbucker-sized P-90 in it now. I'm sure Curtis Novak makes a bunch of pickups that'll fit in a humbucker mount. So, you could put any flavor in it you want. That pickup may sound fine though.

a number of pickup makers now have recreations of the Supro string-through pickup. i considered getting one and putting it in a cheap steel, but by the time i was through i might as well buy one of the numerous $450-500 vintage steels and save the effort.

Is that the thing where they do the reentrant tuning or is that some other kind of E9?
i don’t know what reentrant tuning is. i had a 10-string Emmons S-10 with 3 pedals and one knee lever tuned in what i gather is bog-standard E9 tuning which adds some passing tones and those 2 top strings to open E tuning. i think it was B C# D E F# A# B E C# F#.
[edit] Wikipedia classes E9 and C6 tunings as reentrant. never heard the term before.

Interesting that re-entrant tuning came up today as this's today's Doodle:

reentrant means that there is a break in the pattern wether the next string is higher or lower than the next. it is mostly ukulele players that talk about using reentrant tuning or not. A uke with the high 4th string has a reentrant tuning cause the string is higher cause the pattern says it should be lower but it isnt

I think so too. I have a Silvertone lap steel that looks very similar but hasn't the perloid wrap. It has a P13 which is a predecessor of the P90 and is aparrently more valuable than the steels it came in. There a probably a lot of lap steels without their original P13 and random aftermarket pickups instead.

Yeah, your Silvertone was Harmony-made. Harmony used all those P-13s they bought from Gibson when Gibson moved on to different pickups.

Exactly. It's a great pickup. I would like to try one in some sort of LP Junior or Esquire setting.

i think i could live happily with nothing but mahogany slab guitars with different kinds of pickups and tremolos/vibratos.

Not Mahogany! Not remotely cheap! Made in Finland!
