I was actually thinking more about replacing my venerable Fostex eight track? Something self-contained like that. Do they even make those anymore?
I've been using one of the smaller Fostex 8 tracks. I picked it up for $50 shipped. It's probably going to remain my main recording interface, due to ease of use; it just sucks not being able to do easy real time editing and rerecord scratch tracks and stuff. It's not that it can't, it just takes a little extra attention and effort. Definitely cost effective.
You can probably pick up one of the aforementioned Zoom recorders for about the same amount, and have some more options in terms of mic arrangements and editing. Do any of those have filters and stuff to help clean up condenser mic recordings?

It's been a while, but I believe there are lo and hi pass filters and such, compressors, eq, whole bunch of shit built in. And only two ins have phantom power.

I think a lot of what is coming out of russia would make good covers. If this -
Isn't a microcosm of what wrong with humans, I don't know what is.
So I was kinda bummed I didn't get to go to D's show tonight, thay had just a freaking sick lineup of bands on the bill, due to us failing to check schedules of things we want to be at before we book something for us, but ended up having a blast anyways. Very cool place and I hope to do more shows there.
And we sort of got a press review!
http://www.nadamucho.com/14-bands-to-wa ... nite-flux/
The video in that is one of our early shows and the audio is kinda fubar, but cool none the less.
Almost forgot. Broke in the SG tonight and it not only failed to explode into it's various components, it actually held tune pretty good. I checked it twice, adjusted 2 strings the first time, and didnt have to fuck with it at all the second. Yes, I was nervous that it would somehow fall apart or not work

Very much diggin it and it just might cure my guitar gass for a while. (unless someone makes the same damn thing out of aluminum. that would be the shit!)

Greetings my dudes, this is my first post here after lurking for a few months now.
Now, I need some input from you veterans that seem to have a seemingly infinite amount of knowledge when it comes to old amps and gear in general...
My current situation: I've been playing guitar through a DI rig (Axe Fx Ultra - straight into an interface and out of monitors) for about three years now. I haven't played in a band in about a year, and sold my head/cab (barebones, an old 5150 BL and a Recto 4x12. Have only played in less than desirable death metal bands at this point) awhile back to fund college. I have found a drummer buddy with very similar taste and now want to build the rig I've always truly wanted.
Now, I found a Sunn 1200s on GC Used with no picture yesterday for 350. Initially I didn't think of it as the rack mount reissue, while being a bass amp, I figured I could get away with using it for guitar efficiently enough--especially at that great of a price. I went to my local GC this morning to order it and asked whether it was the rack reissue or not, my clerk made the calls and confirmed me that is was NOT the reissue. I paid 400 with shipping, walked out disgustingly happy.
I started to lose trust in my shitty GC employee sitting in KFC waiting for my food shortly after, so I looked up the GC it's located at and decided to call and confirm... it's the reissue.
Obviously I can return it once it's delivered to my house and get my money back, but I'm pretty bummed at this point.
The question I'm trying to get to: Have any of you had experience with this reissue? It's hard enough trying to find a 4 ohm guitar cab as is... Is it worth keeping? Any cab recommendations? Should I resell or just return? As far as the sound I'm going for, it's rather broad--I'm really just looking for a decent quality rig that takes pedals well and isn't too thin.
I appreciate all input! Thanks a ton!

How long do you have to return it? You could always bring it by GC if/when you return it and ask to run it into 2 8 ohm cabs for a 4 ohm load; assuming you are still without a cab. (I mean, you have to know it works, right?)
I've noticed that some of guys here prefer having MORE speakers to having a particular speaker/s. Take that into consideration; lots of PEAVEY KVLT LVB. I feel like there are a lot of old amps that aren't widely used that would do fine for doom, the higher wattage the better.
Good to have you!

I have not played the reissue. (I hesitate to even call it that) As the happy owner of this-
Those new 1200s's are the bane of my existance. I really wish they had not called it the same as it's a very different thing with a different purpose in mind. I purchased mine as a project in not working condition and when I was trying to get info, guess what kept popping up every time I searched....
From what I have heard, it's not total garbage as a bass amp, and most owners like them and are impressed with the volume on tap. I think it uses 2 12ax7 tubes in the pre section and the power is modern style solid state bass amp. Fender makes the same amp as the bassman 1200. I think it would probably kick ass for bass, but not so much for guitar. I've never been a fan of amps that claim "toobz DISHTORSHUNZ!" and have a token tube or two in the pre. If you found your way here, I'm guessing the kind of sound you are after comes from overdriven powertubes at massive volume. which this will not do. Still a good price for that i think? You might be able to flip it. Maybe one of our bass brothers can chime in on that.
Edit for disclaimer: I'm going off what I recall from seeing posts and going "DAMMIT AGAIN!!!" and hitting the back key to find info on the old ones, so above info may not be 100% accurate but i think its close.

Glad to be here! I've belonged to several forums over the years and this community seems to be the most friendly of them all, so far.
Standard 30 day policy. I am currently without a cab, but I'm supposed to be picking up an old Marshall 1960 next week... I keep thinking about the load and I just don't have the cash to dish out for a second cab at this point. brrrrrrgh. However, I'm not a purist.

Fuckin' hell, that's what I'm afraid of. I'd much rather it go to someone else and make a bit of a loss than have to endure another trip to Guitarcenterland...
These posts have pretty much answered my questions, this place is great and absolutely not helping my wallet.
If you have any good <500$ head as well as cab suggestions hit me with them!

Plush/Earth=fender twin circuit
Peavey Butcher.VTM (others) =JCM800
Sovtek, although I see these starting to go for more.
Broken sunn stuff if you can fix it or get it fixed for cheap
Acoustic control corp (solid state but sound great, generally very cheap)
I've said it before, you can get the tones your after out of just about any large tube head, throw a pharaoh and an od of choice in front and run the amp clean. Instant
Sure better amps will get you closer with more ease and yes I would consider the above to be better amps. But I would not turn my nose up at a 5150 or mesa or whatever.
My main thing for vintage stuff isn't so much how it sounds, but more that I know a point to point wired amp is going to be easier for me to work on, maintain, and keep going forever. Any amp built with modular pcb with board mounted tubes and pots I would stay away from. IMO they were designed to be disposable.

Just picked up a Black Forest OD (sent payment at least), can't wait to try pairing it with my Pharaoh on guitar. I'm also going to try it out on bass, just for fun.
As far as budget rigs go, kind of hard to go wrong with a Marshall 1960b and a Peavey Butcher or VTM120. That's a loud rig that can be had for not a lot of money on the used market.
