agreed. it’s like it’s being eclipsed by a softball.

Just finished doing a setup on this and haphazardly filed the nut down, it's a 29.75" scale Danelectro neck on a 60's Kawai body. It feels much better to play now. I'll mess with the setup some more. I thought about making it a bass VI but I've never had a short scale bass before.
Right now it just has some spare strings on it, tuned BEAD in guitar range.
All the wiring is original and I touched nothing for once.

i wouldn’t call this a hack job, i’d call it a cool project bass/guitar/whatever.

did you spray the body? no way a 60s Kawai body 1.) came in that finish and 2.) survived in such good shape.

Oh yeah, definitely. It was a very uninspired sunburst before and I covered it in a layer of rustoleum green and a layer of glitter followed by polyurethane. I can't decide if i like the mirror pickguard or not.

i think the Japanese chromed pickguards affect the sound of the typical ~3kΩ pickups they used in guitars quite like this and help with shielding from RF interference. if possible i’d want to compare with/without. IIRC i tried the Teisco Imperial that’s in the Kondor and it was different without the pickguard.

so paint, then regular glitter? or some kind of paint with glittery bits in?

Huh, that's interesting about the pickguard, I never considered that. Cool.

and yep, it's a layer of rustoleum, the color might actually just be "green", and then a layer of the green glitter spraycan they sell. You have to be careful though, because the glitter is suspended in a very thin clear coat and it runs easily, so your technique has to be farther away, lighter and with more coats.
Warming the can in a bowl of hot water seemed to help it work better. Gotta clear it after each use, too, or it clogs instantly.
They make a purple glitter, it was almost shiny purple.
