Hot passives are the way to go as far as I'm concerned. Overwinding does roll off some high frequencies, but that's cool with me. I play bass, not treble. And Kent Armstrongs are very underrated, that guy does some great work.

I picked up a DarkStar-equipped Peavey T-45 over on TB, nice bass (though way heavy) and a good deal. They're just really good single-coil pickups, lots of output with low noise and a very wide frequency range.
