Gear Goals 2019

Not much, I'd like to add a Tensor and maybe one or two others if I have spare funds, otherwise it's going to be making noises with what I have.

My newest new year idea is free, but it's going to involve a lot of moving stuff about.

I can't think of any pedals I currently want to add to the mix, but right now there's one instrument I can't get to for all the pedals on stands in the way, so I'm going to have to move all my gear out of the way, put the desk that's behind them out of the way and put the pedals, amp etc. in the space left by the desk so I can get to my piano

No point in it taking up masses of space if I don't use it, and I like a lot of the slow, thoughtful way Radiohead use piano, so maybe I should try a bit of that.

I did clear some space but still can't get to the piano.

I didn't buy a Tensor.

I did sell off loads of my pedals due to needing the money, and I've subsequently bought three new ones when I no longer needed to hold on to all the money I had.

I also built myself loads of pedals (13 so far IIRC) and have plans to build quite a few more - there are currently four of them on my "board".

I got a fair amount of stuff last year, so this year is gonna be more about consolidation and getting more creativity out of what I have instead of just adding a new doodad to make novel bleepbloops.

My main practical gear goal is to find ways to cut down my rig so I'm dragging less junk out to gigs (and taking forever to set up and tear down).

Music goals:
- I have a solo album that's getting a physical release, and a release show pretty much planned up. So, hoping to get momentum from that I guess.
- try to set up more duo-ish improvising duo gigs, especially ones where I get to manipulate other people's sounds with my pedals and whatnot.
- wrangle some more band gigs and try to help set up some actual proper recording time.
- get some guitar calluses back, and go through my dad's old fakebooks to come up with a country tribute set.

Largely successful! I didn't buy much stuff. I did manage to cut back my live setups, at least a bit, and even did a couple things with fairly minimalist setup. (Though my minimal setups still usually involve hauling around a mixer and a power brick, so...)

Did get to manipulate people's signals more, including with sax in my band which has worked out quite well. We released a tape and did three gigs over the summer, adequately busy by our standards.

I did do a country tribute set for my dad, put together a band for it and everything. It was fun. Didn't touch a guitar all year again after that was done.

Primary goal:
Play more.
Secondary goals:
Downsize the board a little
Dr. Scientist the Atmosphere
A new standard analog voiced delay
A more experimental delay (any suggestions?)
A new OD that satisfies me

Actually I'm doing the exact opposite of downsizing, but for the rest I'm quite OK. Atmosphere is wonderful, Molecular Distruptor is a really cool experimental delay (and a lot more). Rubberneck is incoming as main analog one, and I decided not to change the OD but to go with the rehousing option, which should be done in a few days.

Now I "just" need to play more.

Sooo, downsizing goal was obviously failed big time.
For the rest, I can say I safely scored all the other ones, except for the fact that I bought and sold the Atmosphere, but it will soon be back (I hope).
Building a mini rig to play at work during lunchtime has been the best idea ever, I started to play again almost each day, and have written tons of riffs and ideas, goal of 2020 is to consolidate those into something.

Not planning on buying anything for 2019. I have plenty of equipment, plus I'm getting close to paying off my student debt and need all the disposable income I can get to bludgeon that motherfucker to death.

Goal: Sell everything, buy a few things I really want and/or need.

Reality: Sell a few things, buy everything except what I really want and/or need.

Reality: Bought like $6k in guitars/basses/various, sold a pedal maybe.

Fully understand that I shouldn't make goals because I will fail to achieve them. Might as well bet on black and red at the same time.

2019 goals:
1) Buy pedals
2) Hate myself
3) Sell more pedals
4) Complete my 7U case
5) Release 2 albums, because 1 just seems like too much anyway might as well shoot for 2
6) Do a collaboration
7) Break up one of my bands
8) Play a show
9) Break up the 2nd band
10) Set more things on fire

5) Finished one solo album, haven't released it yet. Questioning the format. Digital only seems not as serious. Wanted to do a cassette for physical but deadlocked my thoughts. Didn't want to order 50 and be stuck with 47 left. For reference, see point #2.

8 & 9) 2nd band is a duo, have 7 songs, some of the best work I/we have ever done, ready to book shows and hit a studio next year. Happy to not achieve the 2nd breakup, wish we could have played a show in 2019, almost happened but we waited to be ready before we started contacting people.

1) Finish building my Telecaster, for which all parts are already in-hand.
2) Replace the humbuckers in my SG with a pair of Frost Giants I already have, and find a more interesting pickguard to match.
3) Start planning out and building a baritone guitar.
4) Replace my guitar pedalboard with a custom-built, folding one, and get a Mercury7 to finish it up.
5) Get a Freqout, Mini, Shigeharu, Tonal Recall RKM, and small-to-medium pedalboard to finish up my baritone board.
6) Get a small board for my bass pedals.
7) Replace the two blown speakers in my Quad Reverb with Redbacks, and subsequently replace the other two speakers with the same.

I did okay. 3, 5, and 6 were all pretty minor goals, with no real particular need to achieve. 1 remains a constant source of guilt and frustration, 2 was done but one of them needs repairs/upgrades so only kinda, 4 desperately needs doing and will soon actually be standing in the way of playing shows, and the most important part of 7 got handled.

I might buy another pitchy glitchy pedal for my board as I sometimes wish I had another option. On the other hand I'm often content, so we shall see.
Maybe get some other instrument to change things up? Like a sampler or something? Or maybe not?
Record the new iRerror album. The only clear gear-related goal of the year.

I’m definitely on board the Learn More About Logic x train. I’ve been using logic for years but I really need to start getting more out of it. I just put a 1 TB SSD into my iMac that I purchased in May, SSD is a fucking must. So good.

I’ll say I have no desire for new pedals but that’s probably not really true. But I want to spend less on gear this year.

I’ve been far more interested in Synths so that’s something I may start squirreling away some money for but really I should just get a solid MIDI controller and use the synths I have in iOS and Logic/VST.

Learned nothing about Logic. Had a baby. Bought a duck ton of pedals and then sold them all except three. Didn’t touch synth stuff. Bought an amp. Trading (today) my main amp and cab for something smaller, which should be better for me, but it’s possible the flip train continues.

I’m probably buying a ring mod this year. Still have to solve the conundrum of loving the sound of the Moogerfooger but disliking its format.

Maybe an OPamp Big Muff just for the sake of being my teenage SP fanboy again?

Before I tackle the 2020 thread, figured I'd update my 2019 post. Overall I failed miserably, adding way more pedals than I intended. It was a good year though for new releases especially from Chase Bliss, Empress, and also loved the Attack/Delay from EHX.

Upgrade my recording set up with new computer and monitors Check
Build a small rack to augment my Folktek stuff and Grandmother Check..kind of..bought a case and racked Mescaline and added a couple of other Folktek modules but haven't gotten too far with it
Bass Amp.. contemplating switching to bass for a live project..Check..kinda developed a little crush on playing bass as I was working on some demos..eventually drunk purchased a cheap bass amp at Earthquaker Day.. Don't know why I thought it would be a good idea to try and join a band as a bass player but it's nice to be able to play without going direct/using headphones if want
Still holding out hope for Zoia Check, did not disappoint
Mayyybe a Tensor and/or Enzo No and No, did end up getting a bunch of other pedals tho including Mood, Fabrikat, and Blooper which has scratched the Tensor itch. As far as Enzo is concerned, I think for now I'd rather play my actual synths rather than simulate it on guitar
I always squirrel a little away for if/when EQD releases something cool Check..Plumes is awesome and has been a mainstay on my board ever since
