Despite never being able to settle on a muff, I've caved in and ordered one. Curious to see if I prefer it to the Creme Puff clone I had, which was heavy and warm, yet yielding and malleable to the touch like some kind of wonderful vagina. I have a feeling the Green Russian will be heavier and maybe a little tighter, but it'll have that almost useless big muff tone stack, which I hate.

Benefits: Thick low mid-range kind of thing, nice and chunky low end that doesn't flub out even on max'd out sustain knob settings. And the tone stack is fairly useful between like 10 o'clock and 3 o'clock

Sounds pretty good to me.

The bass portion made me think of the Intro to the Nirvana Wishkah live album.

This post made me listen to the Wishkah-album for the first time in at least 10 years. Sounds better than I could remember.

It's not so much the limited range, but that they're just so basic. For comparison, the Creme Puff's tone and fuzz are quite interactive. As the gain goes up, so does the treble, and IIRC the tone pot sounded like it was shifting the whole scoop range or something, but I might be wrong. The Peach fuzz tone control seems to behave in a more typical way, but it's still useful in shaping the overall tone and behaviour of the circuit, especially in relation to your guitar vol and tone controls.

The bog-standard Muff tone pots always feel like they're totally separate, like they're just slapped on as a utility function. They just muffle everything or add harshness regardless of where you have the gain. Even on fancy muff clones that get dark rather than muffled, and sound crunchy rather than harsh, just don't feel very sophisticated, and I think it's an overlooked aspect of the muff circuit. But then again, the Frantone's are different circuits that just happen to sound very muff like, so that goes to show you need to fundamentally change the circuit to get better functionality.

Anyway, the Green Russian is what is so I'll shut my mouth. As long as the fundamental tone is solid, I hope it'll put an end to my muff-flipping habits without breaking the bank. :whateva:
