One thought about that -- so much of fringe Japanese music is about fetishizing Western culture (see like every AMT album title/cover art) in ways that, were they not a Japanese band, would be ridiculed. The fact that they have derivation as a major focal point of their music is sometimes super weird to me -- I can speculate, but I can't claim to understand it.

Would I be correct in saying that derivation is a focal point of many aspects of Japanese popular culture? (Not rhetorical, I'm actually not sure. I don't understand it either.) Potential example: anime characters are mostly caucasian looking. Never found out why. One suggestion runs contra this line of thinking, i.e. Westerners "see" the characters as being white as default.

I have no idea. my experience with Japan is pretty much exclusively music orientated.

Damn, I dig both of those bands, especially the second one whose name I don't understand. I've actually studied Japanese and traveled there once, but I can't read kanji. I love the title "Hemp Coaching Juicer", though! Or is that artwork from a split maybe? Like I said, I will definitely order some vinyl from you when I can afford it.

That's a split between the band High Tension Sex Girl and Hemp Coaching Juicer. HTSG ended up getting way better after that split, but only released 5 more songs before breaking up. It's a huge shame because I believe they would be the best band in the world bar none if they kept on going. Unfortunately the only videos on youtube are live videos of them, and most of them the bass is blown out because people record with their phones, so it all sounds terrible. If you ever see a copy of their self-titled EP though pick it up because it's crazy how they blended noisy stuff with emo/screamo.
