When every other forum turns out to be endlessly lacking imagination, recycling the same threads or questions and painfully sticking to the same concepts and habits, here on ILF, folks try new things and share novel or crazy ideas without any fear of being judged or shot down.
For me, this open-mindedness characterizes ILF. It is like a safe haven for those who think differently, a giant international gathering of quirky and interesting characters that I feel I know rather well despite having never met a single one of them. It is an odd and rather unique thing, a bit like a family.
Sometimes there is some tension and folks argue but eventually all agree to disagree and move on and sometimes everybody has tremendous fun together, a bit as if we were all jamming together and it really did work brilliantly - smiles all around. I tend to watch it all from the sidelines but I need my daily dose of ILF.

So in keeping with family tradition, I evidently voted for penis sandwich.

since we've come along a few pages calling him 'the shirt guy' i thought he deserved a name.
his name is matt taylor, and he's a british scientist and he works with both the european and north american space agencies (esa/nsa). brief non-shirt related profile here http://rosetta.jpl.nasa.gov/matt-taylor

and here is a pic of his rosetta tattoo Image

a friend of mine did part of her internship for her ma at the hadron collider at cern. she's a big fan of matt and of coxy (brian cox, uk scientist, academic, author). i take my lead from her re what to think about him because she knows people who know him personally (so can vouch for his sincerity and decency) and is working to some day move in the same circles and work on the same things. she is someone i much admire. smarter and more talented than me.
she said that she and those she works with (male and female) were both saddened and disappointed about the way the whole thing got hijacked and misrepresented by 'interest groups' trying to hang their argument on a hook it doesn't belong on.
she's a dude, a great musician and a brilliant mind, and i repect her judgement on this (defer my assessment to hers) because her values, knowledge and insight into this one come from closer to the source of the action than 99% of the fluff that has been blown up around it since.

anyway, it aroused my curiosity and i found two 'sample articles' to compare and contrast, from the same (slightly left-of centre bias) paper (the uk guardian), both from the science section and written hours apart, by male and female journalists. to compare the two is an education in itself.

http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014 ... ding-comet
http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014 ... s-clothing

interesting line from the second piece: "all of this raises multiple questions, not least why people in science aren’t routinely trained to be more aware of such issues?"

i suppose a possible answer to this one might be...

a) because they don't give a fuck about petty shit.

they are scientists, male and female, working together to do important things.

but that 'men and women working together to do important things' isn't a story that suits some people's agendas. which is where the shirt comes in.

So wait...people were mad about that shirt??? WHAT? I don't see anything wrong with it? I'm I blind or dumb?

Shit I've worn so many offensive shirts before. Not with women on them, but other things. Being from Kansas kind of blows sometimes because people will say shit to you. My Starfucker shirt saw permanent retirement because I got so fucking tired of people saying shit to me. I mean I can see it being offensive, but I was 17 at the time and fuck you saying shit to me!!! :)

I want this shirt bad but am afraid of the potential backlash around here.

Nailed it. Oh noes, a euphemism that could be perceived as offensive to someone somewhere!
While the *decent human being* thing to do is be respectful of others as people, respect itself is earned...and not through the call for selective "sensitivity training" which is absurd and offensive. Because let's be clear, it's really "reeducation for men".
I question the push to make mandatory any curriculum of "acceptable speech and thought" with an emphasis on language, because obstinate bigoted sentiment will endure and just go underground, adopting new euphemism to lurk in the shadows with a heightened sense of purpose and axe to grind sharper. All it does is obfuscate or bury true feelings under insincerity and add to the resentment which then erupts in spectacular fashion over the pettiest of petty incidents. While I do enjoy creative ambiguity, I have a preference for clear sentiment.

FTR my not naming [him] or [her] specifically was by design, and not to be perceived as a slight to either.
It was an attempt to discuss this without again linking their names to the controversy, as this is now months old and they already have this ugly incident associated with them and would probably prefer to move forward. No need to feed the search bots more fodder to dig up every time their names are searched.

He seems like the kind of guy who would be right at home around ILF. Real passion and panache radiates from the brief glimpses into what makes him tick.
IDK anything about her...but her [re]action only serves as repellant, leading me away from curiosity and a desire to listen and know more. It's unfortunate.

But that's neither here nor there......how fitting for ILF and this very thread. Shenanigans, silliness and lockerroom humor accompanied by tolerance and compassion. Those latter 2 are rarely seen along for the ride.
The crudest anonymous trolls are typically 12-17 year olds showing off for their buddies, college d-bags showing off for their buddies or bitter old "never was-es" showing off for their buddies, all while cringe fishing for internet high fives.
There are countless Scumbag Steves and Hypocrite Feminist/College Liberals for every legit Elliot Rodger and gold-digging femme fatale.
What do they all have in common? Breaking rule #1. Also foreveralone undesirability.
But of all the memes, I probably laugh hardest at Insanity Wolf :duck: :D
Thankfully ILF is the type of community that doesn't make me feel like an asshole for being myself...and being a jovial dick is funnier anyway. Just gotta temper things to not break that #1. It's a blurred line.
Also member, huh huh.

Anyway...yes the Rosetta mission is remarkable.....but I don't see anyone asking the important questions.

Yeah I love ILF and its members. Even if I'm not loved in return. Mozart had his critics too. I do have a habit of offending people, even though I try not to it just happens. But that's why I love this place is that it all gets forgiven and forgotten. I try to live by the don't be an arsehole rule in all aspects of my life, not just here. But we all have our off days. Big hugs go out to all of you

The "shirtstorm" incident is weird. It's like if I passed you on the street and suddenly tripped and bumped into you. You could either say "No worries dude" and walk on, or you could start screaming "OMG he tried to rape me, stop this hideous man, my life is the centre of the universe" and so forth. Somehow one of the options seem a bit more sane, no?
