Ryan wrote:This isn't revolutionary though, just a fun idea with the Spin chip that lots of companies have been using for years. I think most companies wouldn't go for the memory chip swapping because there's no way to protect or hide the information on the memory chip.. anybody with a usb programmer could pop the memory chip into that and look at the code. I don't really care about showing what I'm doing though, it's always about more than that anyway and anybody truly determined can get their hands on any circuit etc they want, can't worry about it.

All I can say is that I support this message.

yet many of us (who have plugged into your pedals) here know you're a genius!

your builds are so thorough and compact, cloners would be wasting their time anyways. your PCBs make them shudder.
Then you make them beautiful and affordable, not to rub it in their faces, but for our pleasure.
keep it up ryan!

Ryan your open attitude was one of the reasons why are starting following Dr Sci. There are heaps of reasons why I find this really commendable, both practical and more philosophical, but from a purely customer standpoint, the most important thing is that it helps me make a decision on whether I'm interested in a certain pedal. Youtube compresses the crap out of everything, and you're hearing a very specific combination of gear/recording techniques, but for example with the Elements I knew that having the bass cut before the gain stages, and the mid boost before the gain stages was really important for the sound I was trying to get. Knowing the frequencies of the mid switch was really important. I know I like LED clipping. So having a proper description of the circuit made my choice easier.
The layout to me is an indication of your knowledge which is in its turn a sign that i don't need to worry about stuff like poor routing causing excessive noise - I know I have a designer capable of building away those problems. It also is a sign that I can expect a high level of reliability, which again is important if you're taking pedals out into gig situations. Fine, none of these things are infallible, but I'd be awfully surprised if there wasn't a correlation between those things.
Go Ryan Go! BitQUEST!!!

Hey now that's pretty cool! Those are your weapons on your kitchen floor there, amirite? Dungeon Crawl Tuesday at your house? Frig that's gonna be fun! I think you have a battle axe and a battle hammer though, not that your enemies will care when it's smashing towards them. Post pics of your loot haul!

bronzetalon wrote:Also how nice is the tracking on the pitch shifting patch? If its not great how about a patch dedicated to up one octave and down one octave....you would be the raddest evar.

Well sir, the pitch shifting at one octave down gets some dev comments frequently on the Spin forum, it's a little limited and the method you have to use results in a warbling at certain pitches, most noticeable over low held notes.. it has to do with how the shifting is constantly looking at the oldest sample it can and using that to calculate the new pitch.. the frequency it does that at can kind of communicate with certain musical pitches and warble.

You gotta keep in mind I'm not trying to re-define the cutting edge of digital technology here, the Spin chip is intended for rock'n'roll, you knowwhatimean? It sounds cool and is fun!

I hear you though and there's a technique you can do with programming where you repeat the process on the samples, called oversampling, and it can have a big effect.. I do it on my notch filter patch 3 times to really notch that sucker to the max. The pitch shift code is quite long though, I don't know if there's room for even one more iteration.. but I hear you, down the road, not for launch, I could split that patch into up and down octave patches and try to oversample them for better results...

Yea I aint look for perfection...I'm thinking about getting the dev kit and the bq and playing on my own.

Good idea, Ian, the BQ would be a perfect tool for that with all the right controls to make any effect. Like a digital Inventobox! *smile*

This week I made the first BitQuest in real life, the first proto is borned and it works perfectly!

Here's the layout image:

BitQuest! Sept 2013 ctrl1 exp.jpg

I don't know exactly what we'll do for the finish or knobs, this is just for fun, but I could see it having the jewel.. jewels really suit an adventure quest in my opinion. And I just added the labels in Picasa but that's how the controls will go.

Side shot for jacks.. the expression jack will take over for digital control 1 letting you run the cool parameter of every patch with your foot. (filter freq, notch freq, pitch, delay time, sample rate, reverb decay, one cool control for each patch)

Kind of a tough build but that's part of the fun of the adventure!

So the box and pcb are pretty much sorted... now I just need another weekend or three to finish the code!

The binary says bitquest! guys so theres that. Maybe labeling the presets 1-8 would be a good idea to make it easier to remember otherwise it looks great so far...can we get a taste test?

That is really nice! Purple! :3

And I agree about possibly numbering the modes? It just might be easier since with that many modes, one wants to easily be able to tell which one they're using.
