Maz, I know this sounds cold, but don't break up with her until after her next period. That way you know there's no little maz's running around. Damn, I am a calculating bastard. But who's counting, anyway?

he's been on a different continent for a while, i doubt they've done lately, or discussed her cycles.
wait until she's done her exams
and then do it over skype. ask her to turn off recording (if she does that usually)
try to say as little as possible... just use distance as a main reason (which is probably accurate)

Staying friends with ex's is hard work. I will say the absence of sex normally makes it easier to be around someone you used to date. I've also found that this makes breakups easier as well.
