If you're going to buy new I'd look at the Mazda 3 Series. I have one and its lovely. Starts at 17,000 I believe.

What? Batteries can be recycled.

You're probably right about the carbon footprint, when it comes to the batteries (especially if you don't recycle them once you replace)...I care much less about that and more about how much actual gas I'm buying and burning.
I got one for selfish reasons--saving money on gas. I'm not as green as I am cheap.

That video has the Prius driving on a racetrack...of course a performance vehicle will perform better on a race track.

But with everyday driving, I've never gotten less than 45 MPG with my Prius, typically get 51 MPG, and on trips of twenty miles or less have gotten more like 70 MPG.

Top Gear is on a crusade against electric cars. They once drove a Tesla Roadster until it ran out of power...as if they would ever run a ICE car until it ran out of gas!

Yes they did, but in their defense, it’s supposed to go 200 + miles between charges, and they only got 50 on a closed course. A fast 50 but still only 50.
They drive cars like motor heads, which is how cars are really supposed to be driven.
They have driven an ICE car until parts fell off.

The Smart is cool for the city, but I'd be hesitant to roll with the semis.
If I were to buy a car tomorrow, I'd buy a Honda Fit. No leather seat option, but it has an iPod dock
And it's safe:

Can I just say Lotus Elises are jizzworthy? I like the older ones with round headlights, they were so adorable.

Got to drive a Europa around South Africa once.
Loads of fun.
Ferraris are fantastic for drivers, not so much for passengers though.
Love exotics.

Get the one that can drive under water

I can think of a number of doomsday scenarios where that might come in handy.

The Elise actually isn't that bad for the environment, for a supercar. Its just a the same 4-banger engine as the Toyota Celica, which gets around 30 mpg. The reason its so damn fast is that it weighs under a ton. Fantastic car. One of my favs.
