You can buy the same circuits from builders for $50-100 cheaper. Walrus audio, Catalinbread, EHX, Boss, etc. Fuck em.

His videos skyrocket prices on whatever he gushes over so he is no better than Reverb in making music gear less accessible. Fuck em.

They took an in production pedal, the Hyperion, cloned it and sold it for double the price. Fuck em.

Plus the homophobic stance they have taken. Plus the organizations they have supported. Fuck em.

They can grow and improve and become a better more compassionate company, thats cool and I'm not going to hate someone who uses or buys their products, but for me, fuck em. Too many other options out there that won't remind me of bad things.

which pedal is the hyperion clone?

Well now I know, I am super glad I didn't end up with the pulp and peel now. I am the same way too, if someone purchases / uses products from said company I am not going to hate anyone. Like you said, the choices out there are staggering in number - plenty of rad bros out there that make wicked shit.

joshua didnt clone the hyperion. there was som parallel resistors or caps dont remember, doesnt matter. He replaced those with single componets of roughly the same value of the parallel ones. This is what he considered "designing an original fuzz" constitutes. His business of making overpriced GGG stuff is one thing and yeah it's kinda stupid but I have bought like 3 pedals that blatantly are copies of pedals on the market so in the end I endorse it. I think it is important to make the distiction. Just kinda sick hearing people focus more on the ethics of selling a rat for a few hundred when he is some homophobe prick in some missionary sect

Hear that, Even Devi brushed it off after the initial reaction. I only mention it because of the stupid price hike, everything else kind of overshadows it, but the hyperion deal is what got this community to start looking at JHS critically.

I think someone mentioned it earlier, Astro something? JHS stopped producing it after the internet made a stink on it.

Hyperion is one of the better DE pedals I had the pleasure of playing, the best part was that it was cheap pedal wise.

Super helpful info, sorry to stir up a bees nest. I just had no flipping clue.

It was the Astro Mess I believe. Made for the guy from Switchfoot.

But supposedly JHS went as far as to call retailers, and say that Devi had ripped his design, and try to have them stop carrying her wares. This was from her so, take that how you will.
coldbrightsunlight wrote:I have to admit I remember nothing of this at all and just because Devi isn't perfect doesn't mean other people should be assholes, so I wasn't trying to defend JHS. I'm just here for the cheap jokes. :animal:
By no means was I trying to defend either of them either (they can handle these tings) carry on

I thought it was JHS directly copying a Devi idiot savant move that was the tell. Hyperion is two Devi circuits in series, maybe with modifications. Devi’s typical base circuits were plug-and-pray things based on the Electra and Bazz Fuss circuit building blocks. Using these and combining them is not unique. What was unique was using coupling caps at the end of the first block and at the start of the second block within the Hyperion circuit. Anyone who knew anything about pedal electronics would have known that one cap would have been sufficient. Again, Devi. So that’s a bit much of a coincidence, to land on the same fuzz topology and the same rookie mistake. (I’ll assume a couple of values were tweaked for plausible deniability.) If it wasn’t a copycat move but just a hell of a coincidence, it does reinforce the other aspect of his electronics guru shtick as a fraud. But I’m gonna have to ask why not both?
