i really should try to get MIDI stuff with the rack sorted, too--i have a MIDI Mouse controller that works quite well--but i need to establish some patch stacks to do it effectively. this might have to wait until i have more material developed so i can set song-specific patches.

you might also consider a different brand of strings. i find that my guitars, especially the ones with single-coils, sound radically different if i can't find my preferred Regular Slinkies and have to use DRs or D'As.
I've definitely played around with that a bit and agree with you that they can change quite a lot. Lately I use DR 11s or Curt Mangans—both seem to stay brighter longer.
I have a 335 and a Les Paul, both of which have pretty stock HBs. The 335 if the brighter of the two, but the neck pickup is still a bit murky. I've never been much of a pickup tweaker, but over the past couple of years I've played countless humbucker guitars with lower wind pickups, and I'm always really blown away with how much better I like them.
I'm a little worried that changing the pickups won't do that much though, because a lot of times it's a long list of things that contribute. I'm going to stay optimistic though and hope that it'll be at least somewhat significant. Dunno!

i've found that backing a humbucking neck pickup down into the body helps this a lot, too. i adjust my PU height by first finding the optimal height for the bridge PU and then adjusting the neck PU height so the output level matches that of the bridge PU.

Best answer! Should start doing the same thing!

I have a few projects in the works I am designing. Working on replacing all my SS heads with miniature quilter style 200w clones for a portable miniaturized arsenal.

Things I'm planning to spend money on in 2019:
-Reel-to-Reel machine, for playing with longer(than my 4-6 sec cassettes) tape loops.
-Upgrading my Puresalem Reverberation. Mastery trem, installing a pickup behind the bridge, maybe new pups(even though I like the stock pups).
-Bunch of cheap dirt pedals in different flavors to have laying around for studio use.
-Sampler.
-Two Notes Torpedo Captor or similar load box/cabsim/amp-DI.
-Have old gear properly serviced.
Fun ideas that I'm not sure if I'll go through with or not:
-Getting a cello or viola.
-EGC-neck for my P-Bass.

I think I'll focus more on computer recording gear for my guitar (Cab simulator, preamp, ...). But things might change (they always change). :-)

Two clear goals:
- Buy an Octatrack and learn it
- Buy some type of analog or analog modeling synth

Kinda what I'm doing too
Got the OT few weeks ago and I'm keeping an eye open for a Nord Modular G2 for less than 1K

But I have the feeling G1 is just damn fine.

1) Clean garage so I can get to my music stuff. It all got thoroughly buried by whoever put away holiday decorations.
2) Sell unused stuff to make moving easier. Move somewhere else for grad school. Find a way to have my little music space in new, certainly smaller housing situation.
