Nowadays I have no interest in recalling anything. I've been recording mostly destructively, not bothering to save patches or write down what I used or anything. It feels liberating and I can work a lot faster that way.
I have to stop recording little snippets of guitar riffs unless I'm recording them for real. I don't know what it is, but as soon as I put an idea down in voice memo, my brain decides it doesn't have to remember that part anymore, so it's a bitch to revisit and try to suss out.

2 prong strategy over here
1) Build the "rock band" songs with room to explore. Built in, between the intros, the outros, the verses, etc, leave some fuckin space where people can play. If it goes to shit, well then switch to some shit that works, and in a minute or two you'll be back on the verse.
2) Record them at-home freakouts. Sample, slice, and process for further use and abuse.

It would become really annoying over time if you weren't into, what I like to call, "procedurally generated songwriting".

One of my good friends always ends up in bands with me, he's kind of my sponsor for not fucking a riff up. He'll watch me play, listen to the variations, tell me which one was awesome as soon as i play it and then, because I'm incapable, he will play exactly what I just played back to me so I know what he's talking about and hit me if I deviate.
When its me, I just record everything, pick the most solid version to make the part and then keep an ear out for variants to drop in here and there.
Because you can't cook with just vanilla.
Could someone put you in a eurorack module?
The Iommic Poop Sequencer: You program your sequence and variations just keep coming out.
Bruh, that's called Seek by Copper Traces. It has a mode that randomly deviates from your programmed sequence by a set number of semi-tones (within the quantized scale or outside of it). You set the random deviations to occur based on a probability setting, and you can choose between overwriting or keeping the original sequence.

And the Turing Machine does that too, but the original is also randomly generated.
I also usually don't do the same thing twice. When I played live more often I would have "high level" plans for what the performance would be though (i.e. a skeleton) and I improvised things to fill the details.

I'm pretty sure the only way to make the same babies twice is to play/practice for so many hours that you understand the system intimately. Which probably means hundreds and hundreds of hours of intentional, attentive experimentation if your setup is complex. Notes/photos and (semi) methodical exploration of individual parts in relation to each other are both key.
Admittedly, I'm not dwelling in the modular world, but my setup lives on a table and has fairly complex signal paths, which is somewhat analogous to modular. When I find a situation that I like, I figure out the settings, mess everything up hard and then practice getting back to that lovely sound.
I've also finally started to learn to use synths, and I've found this method useful for sure.

The thing this does for me in a fun way with modular is forces me to record entire songs in one sitting to avoid this problem. Productivity!!!

This is what I'm loving about destructive recording. I'm getting so much more done!
