"both sides of the debate" argument is really fucking tired though.

Theyre stupid.
That aside, what the fuxk was Milo Y Breitfart speaking at a university?
The UCB College Republicans invited him. Part of what he talks about is the inability of the progressive (regressive) left to hear points of view with which they disagree. And he unfortunately was proven right at Berkeley.
This is not wrong but is missing the point, I think, based on what I know about this guy (which is somewhat lacking, I've just done some rudimentary google-fu).

As far as I know, he was sort of a garden variety conservative/libertarian who is more or less the perfect embodiment of the fight club loving dudes who didn't get laid a lot in college and didn't think fedoras weren't cool. That's dismissive, obviously, but I think it illustrates the sorts of people who enjoy his work: men and women who wish they had an estuary accent because they're convinced that it'd help them convince people of things. He's also fairly funny and charming on screen, but he never shuts the fuck up when you watch him in conversation. Everyone knows that person.

Point being, he'd show up, say some things that you'd hear in a first year civics class from someone trying to be edgy or whatever, and that was that. As far as I can tell, that changed when he showed up in Wisconsin and, discussing whether the phrase "man up" is worthy of critique (and I agree with his premise that it's a fairly silly thing to be offended by, fwiw), posted a former student's photograph and said "This person doesn't need to man up", because it was a transgendered person who had sued the school to use the correct bathroom.

It's right around the 49:30 minute here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t1ufzttyUM

So this whole thing happened with a photo and name of the student displayed during the segment, as far as I can tell. That is when this started to become a contentious thing, because putting this sort of stuff out to an audience that is not exactly the friendliest to trans folks is, you know, ethically questionable -- particularly when you bring the obligations of the school to protect the student body from harassment into the equation, and a group of people who don't really understand (or willfully don't understand) online harassment, specifically.

And that's why he gets protested and things cancelled. Not just because morons that like to break windows will show up and protest him, but because even if they don't show up and break shit, there's a potential opportunity for this sort of situation to occur over and over again, and administrations don't want to deal with that bullshit, as I'm sure we can all relate to. It has very little to do with his ideas, which don't seem particularly novel, but his approach, which is fairly bitchy, to use the sort of intentional language this guy loves.

There's also the fact that he's a gay dude who has a black boyfriend, and a lot of his fans seem to cling to that as proof that any criticisms about his thinking are abhorred because he doesn't fit "the model" of what someone saying that stuff should look like, rather than the fact that he's just kind of an asshole.

I have a soft spot for dumb anarcho punk shit but antifa beating people for liking music is so shitty. Go fight some border patrol agents or some other actual agents of nationalism.

Yeah what a jerk. I picture that grim reaper pawning his roommate's guitar to score the blow on his coffin. Its just funny to me that it's more controversial for a black metal band to take a stand AGAINST racism / fascism / etc than to just be ambiguous. Like I fucking love inquisition but when that whole controversy blew up about their supposed politics and all they could say is "we're not nazis but national socialism is chill" or whatever it was a real bummer. Like dudes, all your songs are about astral projecting with space baphomets, why you gotta run your mouth about sketchy politics?

They are so awful sounding. I'm kind glad they cancelled for the sake of the people that would have to listen.

So this with Inquisition.

Re Marduk - it's a tough question. My band ended up being a loungeband before the start of a gig with Raubtier and Sabaton. At least Sabaton has professed multiple times to be politically neutral (if not anti-fascist - I can't remember), but still... when the demographic at the concert consists of mostly male, middle aged white guys with not a lot of hair on their heads sometimes it doesn't matter what the band stands for - the audience is a bunch of white power dickheads anyway.

Anyways, it's no great loss. Tons of better second wave black metal to be listening to than Marduk.
