I completely agree, Amsterdam is tricky food wise, there's great restaurants but also loads of crappy ones.
The red light district is one of the worst things in Amsterdam, indeed as you said it is mostly sad and depressing.

I haven't been hanging out in Zurich for while, but for music the Rote Fabrik, as mentioned, is always good. It's by the lake.

If you like it a bit more punky and dirty, there's the Dynamo http://www.dynamo.ch

Also, try the Walcheturm, cool stuff happening there, you can also just hang out. http://www.walcheturm.ch

Then the Xenix is a nice spot to hang too http://www.xenix.ch it's cinema and bar. Saturdays (I think) there's a nice flea market there.

The Bosch Bar is very cool, cheap beers, - http://www.strandbaer.ch/bosch/ concerts, Mondays only.

That's just what comes to my mind now.

If you feel like taking a train to Bern (1 hour), where I live, let me know, you can PM me.
In Bern, there's the Reitschule, https://www.souslepont-roessli.ch , https://www.dachstock.ch Dampfzentrale http://dampfzentrale.ch and other stuff.

Oh, and as you mentioned pot: it's illegal, but it's still all over the place in Zurich, just go to the Xenix, there's always nice people there, puffing away outdoors.

At the airport in Chicago, set off the x ray machine for no reason, had to be taken aside for a groin patdown. Off to a great start.

He had pretty eyes. Also, $9 is way too much for a beer.
