Ohhhh man get ready for Audition. I'd say pretty much all of the other mentioned Japanese movies would fit the bill just fine. Versus is amazing. Also check out Cure for a less cartoonish violence, more sort of subtle and spooky option.

Let the Right One In is one of the best horror movies I've ever seen... the sound editing in particular really made it. Still can't believe they made an English version (the idea that people are too lazy to read subtitles is just offensive to me), but apparently it's pretty much a faithful shot-for-shot remake.

Similar vein, also good: Byzantium.

To be honest, Cannibal Holocaust is an awful movie. It's poorly made and only exists for shock value. It doesn't have any actual substance to it. I used to try and watch the grossest of the gross, and I found it boring and just dumb.

If you're going to watch movies like that then check out

Nekromantic, Schramm or Cannibal Ferox.

If you want something semi funny Green Inferno made me laugh and it's a cannibal movie.

Also wanted to add Takashi Miike is indeed a renowned horror director and amazing at his craft. Not all horror movies are about ghosts and goblins though.

I disagree, with the caveat that it has been quite some time since i've seen the film so a fully researched argument is out of the question from memory of watching it, while a lot of it was shock value and some of it is very difficult to watch, I didn't watch it just because I wanted to see the goriest thing I could in the slightest.

It had a few things going for it, first of all, it's reputation of course, then it was one of the early found footage movies and not in an indulgent way like those that followed in my opinion, normally that shit puts me off but I think it strikes a good balance and works well with a reasonable story tying around it.
I'd say for its time and the on location filming it's actually pretty well made, compares fine to many of the 70's/80's Italian films and finally I found it thought provoking, not exactly because of what the film was trying to say, the clash of civilized culture interacting with uncivilized (although I thought the journalistic integrity point had merit) but because what it's trying to shine a light on is basically what happened during filming from what I remember reading.

But, I certainly accept it's a polarizing film, so he may love it or he may hate it.

House on Haunted Hill remake (definitely a guilty pleasure... you might wanna skip it but for some reason I like it)
The Crazies (the original Romero one, gets skipped over a lot but if you liked the original dead trio I think it's worth a watch)
Creepshow is good for a laugh if you like anthology horror

Man, Event Horizon is one of those movies that is so damn-near perfect for a while, but then the ending just makes me want to murder everything.

Event Horizon is the movie I wish Interstellar was a prequel to. Instead of finding pretty planets/power of love/bad cgi on the other side of that wormhole, I wanted the movie to go off the rails into horror movie land.

Yeah, I know he's talked of that way, just never saw how it is horror (disregarding Audition, which is amazing horror). Most of his movies (that I've seen) have been surreal crime dramas. But I guess the tone of some of his movies can be sort of chilling, though more similar to someone like David Lynch than what I'd usually consider horror. But yeah, everybody should definitely watch more Miike.

David Lynch is much better tho.

Apples and oranges, I was just comparing how I assume people regard Miike's movies as horror. Miike has a way too varied style to easily compare him with anyone else. It's not all shock violence and stylistic cgi.
