Be wary taping stains. They can peel off with the tape. The beauty of stains and grains though, is that it's much more forgiving to do spot fills. Water some right down and blend and build up. If you need to, you can always sand back and do a watered down light coat to finish it off.

I've done transparent colours before (used a cherry red) and put Black Japan (a very light coat) over the top. I can tell you straight up that would look rad on this beast if your spots are bothering you.
Thanks for this post!! This thing that's bothering me is the edge between where I've stained the front and the sides. It's considerably darker there because of overlap. However, I'm gonna do the second coat on the sides and back today to balance the colors a bit, and I'm just gonna use the principle "if it looks okay, it's okay".

Furthermore, I'm debating skipping the poly... That sounds dumb I know, but I have a Gibson SG special faded, which I think basically was stained and done without poly, and it's been starting to wear naturally in a way I actually like. We are talking maybe 7 years of relatively light use though (not very many gigs in all that time  )

I'll see what I'll do.

And oh, I have a neck incoming now! A WD music fender licensed neck

Yeah, don't stress too hard about stains.
As I said, sand harder/more coarse in the overlap areas and go easy on the second coat.

Try a matte clear coat. Unsealed is cool, but if its water based it may flake away really easy.

Show us this neck!

I think I'll do a thin protective layer, after all I want this guitar to last me a long time.

I only have the sellers pictures of the neck. I'm thinking matching headstock :excellent:

Nice.
Yeah you don't want to be glossy on that green.
It looks sweet.

I stained the back of it again and it looks better now, it's ready for some clear coating.

Speaking of matching headstocks, I decided to practice my spray finishing skills on a $50 70s harmony strat I bought like a year ago. I took it apart and quickly realized it was utter CRAP. The neck feels good, and I dig the tuners, so it still felt salvageable though. But the pickups and electronics were a flat out joke, someone had used a knife to carve in "GOTHIC" in the pickguard (which btw is NOT fender specs size). In many ways a piece of shit. But, I've decided to have it as a fun project while the paint on the real one is drying, when I'm waiting for parts or whatever. I decided to just spray the pickguard in a matte black and then clear coat it. Maybe the color will flake of, maybe not. It doesn't mean too much to me anyways. This one is also becoming green, and will most likely be given to a friend.

Got that matching headstock going on too

Just look at how that neck looks now. Thats some relicing for you

Update: got the neck and I've ordered all the remaining parts! Also did a few layers of clear coat, which tbh didn't go ideally. The can I had was about to be empty, so it got quite uneven. I covered it up though and made an even thin layer, but it got a bit runny at a few places...

All I need is 4 screws for the bridge, install my string trees and a jack cup! I'm getting one of those electrosocket ones instead. I have an original one but I seriously can't figure out how to install it so whatever.

Things I've learned:
1) Never buy screws from guitar parts stores; overpriced af and really bad quality. Probably not all of them, but I've seen packs of 4 screws go for like 7$ for higher quality ones. Ridiculous.

2) If I were to do this again, I'd write a list of everything I need, including every single part. Lost a lot of money on shipping for single parts, just to find out I need another part again. Annoying.

3) I can actually solder, I just needed more patience :joy:

The list thing is totally on point. S&h is the true enemy of parts builds and DIY projects.

Thanks friends! Played it all night and spent time setting it up so it feels really good. Plays better than any of the other guitars I have, so I'm really happy. I decided to splurge on a BLK TRI meteorite for the bridge, and might get a LITS down the road :joy:

That is dope. Been wanting to do a telemaster with a term when I get time. Rutgers makes a very cool telemaster Jr. body. Looks killer with the satin green.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Where do find their bodies? Sounds interesting
