...Kelly W wouldn't go out with me when I asked her at the 8th grade dance. She said I wasn't popular enough.
Hm?

Basically this. Wanting music to conform to what is trendy at a point in time goes against the nature of music. Like D-Rod, I get where the guy is coming from, working for a small label that probably has a slim profit margin. But to me, his response is a good indication that you need to look elsewhere, for instance a label that already has some instrumental acts in their base. Giving constructive criticism is great, but wanting you to change your approach to making music is not. Variety is good. Conformity is bad.

That's the name of our new band.
Either that or just "Rando Rock Dood"
There will be no vocalist…
unless you consider some dood or lady dood playing the butt trumpet to be vocalizing.

Got back a response that said that he liked us but we weren't older metal sounding and I quote here " we are just looking for older metal, like Toad The Wet Sprocket"

....
Enormous pit during Toad the Wet Sprocket at a festival in 1994 is what killed slamdancing for me.

f'shiggs. work things they way they work for your label, if we don't fit, cool butts. i'm not as into hitting up as many people as Paul is, but he does all the booking work, so if he wants to i'm in.
guy was just a douche. criticize, cool. tell me what i need to change while showing you're ignorant of the thing you're talking about, SILLY.
hell. i KNOW we're not something that could be that popular. we're not even that good.

i guess i meant an instrumental two piece band is never going to be a super profitable thing, so worries like getting a singer just to be more.l marketable don't really enter into it for me?
but fuck yeah. music is the hobby that lets me relax and stay centered. it's so hard to see doing it as a job.
urrrrrrrr the not very good part is mebbe an over reaction? we just played with some friends for their cd release show, and while it's very complementary, had a LOT of people tell me how awesome Paul and i were, individually and as a unit (heh. UNIT.). it's nice to hear, but it actually makes me think i need to be a better musician? to earn it i guess?

Musicianship is such an esoteric thing, though. You spend your whole life trying to nail down what that actually means.
Just zen out about it and be happy that at least you know where you're at.

Just because people don't exactly under stand what your music is about doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong, if everyone just did what everyone else did or what is expected then nothing evolves
