Makes sense. But it's a lot harder to sustain, and to make it to the public. BBT has a rigid formula, takes no risks, is predictable as fuck. Community seemed to veer off in a new direction in every episode, and that's gotta take a toll on a production team, especially when they're perennially threatened with cancellation. Even if it is fun for writers.
I imagine writing it is basically narrating your interior life (or those of your multiple personalities, as the case may be), where BBT writers have to grind their jokes about how someone is wearing a Star Trek shirt down to such a fine point that they want to murder a baby. Basically, the logic of the split seems a little like "I can do what Dan Harmon does--I have those same thoughts." But making it float, and be funny, and having put in the time kissing ass and pitching shows is not something I could do. So I'll just laugh at the back end of his process (the show itself).
Whedon seems to be doing a whole different thing, and not really writing comedy. He's producing the stuff these shows are milking/parodying, so not sure he's a good referent.

It works as they're both showrunners with pretensions towards auteurship?

This show is top 3 all-time sit-coms for me. NBC really screwed this show over, and the season that came out on Yahoo is really good but no one watched it because it was on f'ing Yahoo. Just skip the season after Harmon got canned. Everything else is top notch.
Obviously the first and second paintball episodes, meow meow beenz, the video game episode, and the chaos theory episode are tops, but one of my favorites is the episode where Pierce has died and gives everyone a vial of sperm.
Also - Arrested Development, Community, Seinfeld, in no particular order.

Guess I'll come in from a long hiatus to say this is the greatest show of all time. P&R sucks a bag of dicks. And BBT started off awesome but after a few seasons became so formulaic that they probably "write " by throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks. I am convinced it is an inside joke to see how long the ship will sail on autopilot because no one has actually written anything new for it in years. I award points for the graph and being DOS because DOS is cool. But no. Just no.

Also I watched an episode of Rick and Morty. That's pretty good.
