Yeah I really hope that the price does come down in May. Their website currently has tickets listed from $199 to $259 after May, which isn't promising, but we're just going to hold out and hope they come down

Rover tours are cool. Talking about Icelandic Santa Clauses is cool. Geothermal springs, northern lights, new foods, elf culture...cool.

Like others have said, hire a car and drive around. The "Ring" road around the island is pretty good, although be careful if you take a detour onto an unpaved road. Here's what I managed to do to a tyre on our way back from Dettifoss, "The Niagara of the North":

Took me hours to get that fucker off on a cold and muddy road. And when I did, the spare wheel in the boot was for another car altogether. So check the spare before you go anywhere. :thumb:
Reykjavik is a fun city but it's very small, the food is average (food everywhere in Iceland isn't great, unless you've got a thing for puffin or horse meat) and you need to be prepared to stay up all night over the weekends because it turns into a party town on Friday and Saturday nights. No idea why. Just go with it.
Get into a geothermal spring whenever you can, visit a glacier (Langjokull is a good one), and check out Papey and Heimaey islands. Iceland is very beautiful, unlike any other place in the world, so sit back and enjoy the scenery.
And eat lots of skyr. That shit is awesome:

Oh, and there's a good Viking museum in Oslo if you get to Norway: http://www.khm.uio.no/english/visit-us/ ... ip-museum/

Man, I got to travel to Iceland to work on Clint Eastwood's film, Flags of our Fathers, in 2005. Was there for about a month and it will always be one of my favorite experiences till I die. I felt like a child again because the landscapes are so fucking beautiful. Was there lat e summer when the sun would kinda dip under the ocean partially and come right back up. The sky was intense and gorgeous.

Luckily, I had weekends off and a cargo van so a friend and I would just cruise around the countryside on the weekends. Got to see the glacier lagoon which was a long journey. Went to gulfoss which is pretty close to Reykjavik. Didn't go into the highlands but mostly country roads near Keflavik where I stayed and where the airport is.

Overall, I love that country and the people I met. After spending a month there and coming home to Los Angeles it was horrible. The light and color there is very clean and vivid.

Reykjavik is great but didn't spend much time there. Totally insane the nights I was there as people go to the bars around midnight and when the bars closed at 6am or so you walk outside and sun is shining so bright you can't see.

Fuck, jealous. Need to go back. Here's some pics from those days:

My girlfriend and I spent a week there in August. Beautiful, people are very kind and the food was surprisingly very good. It's all fresh, the vegetables are grown in greenhouses. What we did:

1)Rented a car
2)Spent two nights in Reykjavik. Unless you have a specific reason to, there is no need to spend more than that there. The city center is small and you can see pretty much the whole thing in a day.
3)Drove the Golden Circle which is highlighted by Gullfoss (opening scene of Prometheus), Geysir & Þingvellir. Picked up two french hitchhikers who ended up spending the day with us. There is a lot of hitchhiking and camping in Iceland by people who want to travel but can't afford hotels, buses and car rentals. We picked up lots.
4)Hiked from Skogar to Porsmork. It's a 32km walk over the Fimmvörðuháls pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull ice caps, then down the other side to Þórsmörk, offers spectacular views and traverses lava from the 2010 eruption at Eyjafjallajökull (I had to copy/paste these names from somewhere, haha). Scenic hiking does not get better. It took us about 8.5 hours to do the whole walk.
5)Drove to the Ice Lagoon where we did a Zodiac boat tour and saw a melting glacier up close. Stopped at Black Sand Beach along the way. Also along the way, I'm trying to figure out how to describe it, this really strange landscape of a lichen-like substance covering old lava flows. Surreal.
6)Drove to the Blue Lagoon. I'll never go back. It was fine to have gone once but by far the lowlight of the trip.

So I can recommend everything but the Blue Lagoon. You definitely have to get out of Reykjavik though, the rest of Iceland is beautiful and surreal. Enjoy your trip!

Edit: FYI, ATP Iceland is the first weekend of July.

Thanks all for the continued suggestions. I didn't realize that Reykjavik was such a party town. Bars open until 6am? That's nuts, but I'm sure we'll check it out at least once. Also really good to know the town is small and can mostly be done in a day or two. We don't really plan on spending a ton of time in town, but we do want to explore it a bit.

@HorseyBoy, shit that's some impressive damage. Would not want to be fixing that in the middle of nowhere.

@LaoWiz: that is wicked that you worked with Clint Eastwood. Those pictures are awesome. Beautiful scenery. I think that's what we're most interested in

@manymanyhaha, that sounds very similar to what we're planning, except I would like to check out one of the super Jeep tours. Good to have some confirmation about the Blue Lagoon. My girlfriend really wants to head there, but I feel like it's far too popular of a tourist destination for me. She really wants to just head to some hot springs, which I definitely want to do, I just don't want to go somewhere that sounds like it would be packed with tourists.

^ Yeah, the Blue Lagoon will definitely be full of tourists. It's on the way to (or from) the airport, so lots of buses, etc stop there. Plenty of other public pools everywhere that might not be as pretty but the water is just as good.
One other thing I'd recommend is dog sledding on Langjokull glacier. That's a whole heap of fun.

Yeah, the Blue fucking Lagoon. It was very busy when we there and not completely intuitive where one was supposed to be going in the Men's locker room and in what order and people were shouting at me every wrong move I made. Imagine being naked among lots of other naked males and people are shouting at you for being a fucktard. It wasn't a pleasant experience.
