While I can get on board with this sentiment, because fuck you, I want two pieces of bread with my sammiches. There is one exception for me - I don't know what it's called everywhere, but back home they call that shit a Hot Hamburger - its two pieces of toast, topped with two hamburger patties (with cheese if you want), covered in fries, and SMOTHERED IN GRAVY. God dammit, it's one of the greatest things.

Back in the day, at either Nick's Beef & Beer House or Charlie's Cafeteria, you could ask for "tops" for your double cheeseburger special. So, then they'd give you the extra top and you'd have two cheeseburgers instead of a double cheeseburger.
