I would actually propose a time limit after we figure out how many people are contributing. A CD can only do 80 minutes, after all...
I would be happier putting together a 10 minute-or-less piece than having a 3 dude compilation.
I didn't imagine anyone actually going over 10 minutes, but good idea.

awesome!! will edit accordingly

So, uh... for people who never really record or play with others... how does one go about hitting the golden -3 to -6 peak thing?

10-12 minutes is about a good length for drones though. If they are too short they may not have time to develop or lose you in it, IMO.
Why not let people make them as long as they want, and if it comes to the point where you are actually going to make a cd, then only those that are X amount of time or less can be considered for the CD? The longer ones would just be available as a download. This way people can write something with the intent of being on the cd or not as they choose and everyone wins by potentially getting more tracks by more people and longer drones to boot?

QFT. I only record things with my phone, but I'm actively ordering better recording equipment, even if it's only a DR 40 or something. I do have a guy that I can have record me, but I don't know if I want to go to the trouble of setting up time with him, especially because he'll be like wtf, this isn't music?!

submit whatever the fuck you want. if it needs to be a triple CD set, I will make it happen. if you can't figure out how to work with a /3 /6 peak don't worry about it, it will be handled and included no matter what. let's get droooooooooooooooning

If there will be CD's made, it would be cool if people listed the gear they used too. I'd love flipping through a little booklet while listening. If it's not too much of an expense, of course. I'd chip some money in to make that happen.
that would be awesome!!

I know I'm not the most active member, but I'd be down to contribute something for this.

I mean I'm using the Zoom H4n on the Items In Space stuff and my sig and it sounds alright? Those things are actually pretty good for capturing ambient stuff because they get lots of room noise and such too.

I use audacity for this. After your track is ready to go select all and use the normalize effect, and you can set what you want the peak db limit to be. Simple and free.

I'm really interested in this but have never done the drone thing before (I just want to experiment and learn something) and have no means to record anything right now.
Also, I'm going to be time poor (moreso) throughout May.
If this became an ongoing series I definitely would like to get in the deep end.

Nice! Been using Audacity for a long time, just didn't know exactly what peeps were getting at. Any fear of the normalize action reducing dynamics?

I'm pretty sure it's just amplification and not any sort of compression/limiting. Ive used it on the most recent material I've put out and there's still dynamics in thur.

This is awesome, I'm in! Hopefully I will maintain motivation and actually record something for this.
Also, would definitely pay top dollar for 3xCD ILF Drone Comp.
