I asked him for a simple custom build about a month ago and he said he wasnt able to.

Bummer!
Maybe that's how he keeps his prices down?

Oh really.
You can't go wrong with either the Grendel or the Skychord stuff, IMO. It really depends on what kind of flavor you're looking for.

Yeah, basically a sleepdrone but with way more features and a lower cost. Hopeful to have it this week and I'll certianly do a demo.

need more videos of somms. less playing the guitar, more playing the pedal!
A group of us banded together and got JWAR some Rucci stuff. I believe we got him the Maximal Drone and one of the Sequencer's so he could get wild with it. Shoot him a PM and see what he thinks -- not sure if he's peeked his tone bone into this thread yet.

I've been slowly getting more and more into drone too, but I'm hung up on what to get. Whats the benefit of all these dedicated drone boxes over just getting a full-fledged MIDI synthesizer module? There are a lot in the same price range. Most are monophonic, so you don't get the note clusters, but they have so many more sound shaping capabilities like variable waveshapes or wavetables, resonant filters, pulsewidth modulation, LFO routing, etc.
Waldorf Rocket looks really good to me right now, but I'm not sure if I can make it drone on it's own or if I need to take up more space with a MIDI controller. Volca Keys also looks tempting for the price point. Arturia Microbrute is another contender for me, but I wish I could hack the keys off.
What I've been using currently:
Mutable Instruments Shruthi-1: impressive mod matrix, wavetables are great, sound can get very complex, but the menu-diving confuses me when I'm tripping out (which I like to do when I'm droning).
Marsynth Morris Box: Sounds very raw, and has a resonant filter, photo sensitive oscillators, but the LFO is only squarewave and I don't like my drones to be choppy, also there isn't enough variance in the sounds to satisfy me.
iPhone: This is by far the smallest and most capable, but if I can't use the Shruthi when I'm high, I definitely can't use this. Also, it just seems unreliable in the long-term with firmware and software updates causing compatibility issues, and it's eventual obsolescence in a years time.

Ooooo I forgot about the Blippoo Box!
Somewhat less drone-y, more random but looks incredibly fun none the less

And here's an INCREDIBLY DULL explanation of how it works:

The timbre qualities of the Drone Commander are really incredible. The lfo doesnt go as slow as I'd like and it could use a compressor to even out the fluctuations in volume and more oscillators are sometimes desired... but the sound just forgives all of that. Its truly incredible.
I wanted one for 2 years before I got my hands on one because it was expensive but its so worth it (too me, at least).

Yeah it doesnt really do harsh noise but it certainly does noise. That filter self oscillates like mad when you turn it down in the low bass frequencies.
But cool shit on the maximal drone, it certainly looks like a good one and that low pass filter will be handy.

awesome thread. really rad shit in here. kudos to whoever posted the sleepdrone 5. when I was a wee lad barely getting into performing noise with 2 BOSS ME-50s I stumbled across that thing and it blew my mind. I was too poor to remember the name at the time. it's still a bit steep compared to what's around, imo. the maximal drone is right on the money. deciding between ordering that next week or the microbrute in b/s/t (if it's still around)
is it dangerous running one of these things through a tube amp?

^not any more dangerous than running anything else through a tube amp.

vidret wrote:yeah all the videos are just great, and I guess it doesn't even do it justice. It seems like it doesn't do harsh noise as good as the rest but it really does DRONE, as compared to NOISE.
if that was available in a smaller box and at a lower pricetag i'd be all over it. if i get even more into this it might become a future goal but for now I think I'm gonna land on the maximal drone from rucci
Agreed on the LFO for the DC, but one way to work around that is to sample a micro loop of the drone and then tweak the speed that way. Works like a charm.
Also, Vid, I've got a Deses Parva I could fire your way for way less than the Maximal Drone if you're just looking to get into it. I'm also quite happy to keep it, too, of course, just figured I'd offer.

Drone Commander is my current life goal. I also need to get more pedals that do drone friendly (or generally unfriendly) textures and modulations, preferably with some kind of sync options.
