I've been listening to a lot of 90s black metal recently.

Musta Surma (the demos)

Striborg

Bathory

Darkthrone.

Obvious choices but no quantizing in site here. Even if it's a drum machine.

What's the point of having Gene Hoglan if everything is triggered and quantised?

Or compare

with
(sorry, shit audio quality, but it was all I could find)

I guess quantising and beat replacement are shitting me.

Fine, I get it that a studio production isn't live, the whole thing is an artificial construction, so clamouring for authenticity is a little silly, but I'm sick of rad drummers doing cool stuff, but then hearing a sound where everything is perfectly on the beat, every kick is exactly punchy and clear.. it just makes it tiring to listen to after a while and detracts from the listening experience for me.

I swear, every drummer in metal is getting "subtle quantisation", just like singers are reluctant to sing without a little subtle autotune. Which I'm also tired of.

I just wish there were some bands doing metal, death, grind, progressive metal, whatever, looking for relatively clear, modern production values, but still prepared to have a human element to it.

Gotta listen through the suggestions in the thread. :thumb:

Schmoly crap dude, the difference in that Meshuggah is insane, in comparison the first one sounds as if E.T. is playing the drums, are those guys deaf?

For more of a traditional metal sound, In Solitude's album Sister is incredibly natural sounding, especially the drums.

On the heavier end of the spectrum, I really dig the drum sounds and production on these recent(ish) albums:

Lantern Below
Horrendous Ecdysis
Dead Congregation Promulgation of the Fall
Mgla With Hearts Towards None and Groza
Tribulation The Formulas of Death
Morbus Chron Sweven
Cultes des Ghoules Henbane

Not saying the drums on these records weren't seriously produced or quantized, but that they simply seem to be more "natural sounding" to my ears.

I stumbled on this thread searching out why anyone likes shit bands like Periphery, Gemini Syndrome and other fucking wanker wannabee metal bands.

I had never heard that Meshuggah before. Holy fuck that sounds so different it's unreal. I think I have the remastered version too of Nothing. Going to have to track down the un-mastered version. Makes me wonder how many other albums are this different.

I like both versions, but the druma on the original slay the remaster.

Morbus Chron and Artificial Brain ended up being favourites from last year. Wanted to like the Horrendous album but man... those vocals...

That Morbus Chron record put me into a dream-like trance quite a few times last year. That Horrendous record is an acquired taste for sure...it's got an almost major feel to a lot of the moments. The vocals really remind me of old Death or Obituary at times.

Yeah horrendous - I love the guitar tone and the riffs, it almost gets sorta 80s trad metally at times, but that high pitched hoarse wailing just gets on my nerves. I have no problems listening to old death and obituary, and you're right, there are clear similarities but ... nope, can't do it.

The Morbus Chron sound ok, but Artificial Brain sounds like they'd stomp your dick in. Reminds me of Amon Amarth for some reason. Love the growl. Son of bitch Opeth...sorry. Every time I say growl I get pissed off now. hahaha
