European model Volkswagens are still made in Germany, right? North American VWs are Mexican made, so that might explain some of the differences in reliability and how well they age.

The production is divided amongst a couple different plants. Spain, Germany, Czech Republic... But honestly there's not that much difference, the workers are just as qualified. Only the unemployment rate in their respective country and the lack of a decent minimum wage makes them cheaper.
Actually, a recent study showed that the most efficient workers in the European car industry are French. Despite working only 35 hours a week and the minimum wage being the highest in the EU, they produce so fast and at an higher quality standard that employing French workers is cheaper per car. I guess education and social benefits are not that bad of an idea...
