You'd also be surprised at how well it does on snare top too. if you can fit the mic in the right spot over the snare and out of the way of the toms and hi hats, it sounds great.

I've used it on snare top a few times. It's nice if you can fit it, which is rarely.

actually just tried out a 57 with a beta57a together and that worked surprisingly well.

The sm57 is a legendary studio and live workhorse. Anyone ever tried it on a trumpet? Magic!!! The md 421 is another great dynamic. Sounds awesome on floor toms, bass amps, guitar amps, saxophones. Both dynamics.

but i've used the 57 as a second kick drum mic and it ruled.

Never used a 57 on a kick drum. Do you just point it off axis for the natural roll of? Or do you use it more for a more focused kick drum sound and point it straight on?

when i've used the 57 for that, i tend to pull it a few inches back from where the first kick mic is and turn it a bit off-axis. i tend to use it for more punch than anything, so i roll off anything above 4k and below 60hz on that channel. if i use the 57 as a second mic, i make sure i'm using either a beta 52, D112 or MD421 as the main kick mic.

If you remove the transformer it'll give you a good amount more low end. Also less out put.

I used an xformerless 57 on floor tom last time around and it was nice.

I might have to buy a used 57 and try that. You can never have too many 57s. Wonder if there is room in there to put a transformer bypass switch in.

It's pretty cool. AMI/TAB-Funkenwerk also makes a T58 replacement transformer for 57s and 58s. I did that mod a while back and thought it was a much more useable and versatile microphone. I unfortunately lost it somewhere along the line. I think it would be pretty easy to remove the stock transformer, then make an external box wired with the T58 so you have the best of both worlds.

here's my 5-mic setup:



On the left is a sm-57 close mic'ed. Directly behind it and below is a Beyerdynamic ribbon mic.

On the right is a E609 closed mic'ed. Directly behind it is a Fathead Cascade II ribbon mic.

Far off is a Chameleon labs TS-1 small diaphragm tube mic.

I would pair the sm-57 with any good ribbon mic a little farther back to capture the room.

I've bought a couple more microphones so far: a T Bone RM700 (which is apparently similar to a Fathead) and a Superlux PRA628 . I would like to get a Rode NT1 too.
