Sorry for going off on a ... tandjent...

As an aside - the tone as I understand it on this recording was an old TC integrated preamp boosting and tightening up a solid state Marshall. Given the virtues of the Klon as a boost rather than an OD... could it seriously help get mid 90s Meshuggah toanz? Perhaps this post wasn't 100% irrelevant. Perhaps.

It was already open when I arrived.

It's no secret that there's a spectrum of variations in sound when it comes to stompboxes. I don't see why it should be any different with Klon. It has nothing to do with quality control. Sure, I guess you can match components more closely, but that's a real Pandora's Box.

I just wanted to make you aware that you'd be pitting a Soul Food against two really nice sounding Centaurs. Who know, maybe the Soul Food's the best of the batch?

I'm interested in hearing the differences.
call me ingenious but i was really expecting that the klon was a high level boutique build that has minimal audible differences. Steve from Pigdog is my favorite example: he is super anal on the tonal details. When you buy something from him, it will exactly sound as it is supposed to be (not talking about differents trannies etc. here! That makes differences.): he has next to none differences in the same pedals. And that is what you pay for. I was expecting the same with the original klons. Perhaps my fault

No, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a certain level of similarity in sound from unit to unit, but the reality of it is a little different.

For one thing, I think Steve's building in much smaller numbers.

Both Pigdogs and Centaurs are labor intensive builds, but there's a little more hand work involved with building Pigdogs. Also, the nature of the circuits are quite different. The parts count in a Centaur is much higher and it's a more complex circuit than anything Steve builds. Construction methods vary as well. Steve has way more control over fine tuning the sound of individual pedals. There exists different degrees of "high level boutique". So, I'm not sure it's really a fair comparison.

Like i Said, maybe i was expecting too much. Steve was just an Exemple. No intentions to be fair ;) complexity and Parts number are obvious...

My buddy bought once 12 different fender Blues Deluxe to find one matching to The one we already had. He failed. So i know pretty well those issues.

So who is sending you now Soul Food over?

:idk: Who here has a Soul Food that I can borrow?

Yeah, those may've been unreal expectations, univalve.

I think it really comes down to a question of scale and production philosophy. Anything semi-mass produced is gonna have a greater variation from item to item than something more hand assembled (speaking only of the circuitry). If Finnegan were to've spent more time fine tuning individual pedals, there'd be a lot less Klons in the world. (Which I'm sure some people think may be a good thing.) :idk:

I should be getting my state tax return next week. I think I might buy a Sould Food for Chankz to try if I'm getting as much as I think I am back.

Awesome skully! Pm me if i can help.

It's no problem Chankgeezman

It looks like Sweetwater has them in stock (for the time being). I should hopefully be getting my return on Monday and if they are still in stock I'll snag one up
I'm curious to see how they compare as well. I've been putting off building a Klone and I figured the Soul Food would pretty much cost around what it would take in parts to build, so why not

Honestly, I don't know how much tonal variation there is. I can only go on what I've heard (and I've probably heard more Centaurs than most). I think for the most part, a lot of them sound very similar. There are a small percentage that sound better than the majority and a small percentage that don't quite sound as good. I think many people would have a hard time discerning the difference. Yeah, it's splitting hairs.

So, what's your Plan B, univalve?

skully, after you get the Soul Food, I think you should build a Klone anyway.

Yeah I would think with a circuit like this the differences would be fairly minute

And yeah I'm still thinking about doing it. I know that Madbean has a Klon-a-like that is pretty much the Klon circuit just a little more efficient in terms of part count and layout (uses a much larger op amp instead of 3 seperate ones, etc) that I might build to see how even that compares to the Soul Food etc.
