Had to look up gamelan music
It's already so drone-y, it would sound great paired with more drones
Get on that
Also I agree with all of the above sentiments.
You really can't consciously create a new genre but by doing your own thing and playing your own style it could evolve into something new
Black Sabbath is a bad example, because there were tons of English bands playing heavy blues around that time. Sabbath is not a radical departure. Don't get me wrong (they're my favorite band) but they didn't revolutionize music all by themselves, or anything of that sort.
Is it possible to create new styles of music? Yes, of course. But if it's contrived, it might be easy to see. If your band decided on a direction during a band meeting or a series of emails, you're probably off to a bad start.
Originality isn't valued enough today, IMO. One approach… stop listening to all the same shit everybody else is listening to. And maybe stop listening to the other bands in your genre. If you play black metal and all you listen to is black metal, guess what that leads to...
I agree with K2000. It shouldn't be a set goal to try to be different/original, and you shouldn't listen to only one style or be set on only playing a certain style. Listen to loads of music and incorporate things that you like into what you make. Make what you want to hear and listen to a variety of music. That's what's going to make you an interesting musician and not the millionth band/artist that makes Led Zep styled blues rock, or just another modern rock band with some dude with really high testosterone levels doing their worst attempt at Eddie Vedder's vocals.
I thought up "doom-wop" at practice the other night. I went home and googled it and found out the band Mister Heavenly used it first. Although they don't fit the description IMO.
