The finish is super thin on the bass, I've peeled some off with just my fingers and it dents really easily.
Also, I'm pretty sure the body is made of plywood

I'm going to a family thing this weekend so I'll ask if my dad or uncle has an orbital sander I can borrow.
If they don't I may take you up on that offer, Matty.

I wouldn't sand it at all. A little of the original burst showing through eventually will be pretty rad.

I'd go with a coat or two of Flat Black Primer and then paint over that with THIS.

I've used that Champagne Nouveau on a headstock and it worked out nice and thin with good coverage.
It looks a little more natural than most of the other golds I saw and it's metallic but not glossy so it doesn't get sticky.

Hmmmm that might be cool.... and it would be EVEN EASIER than this has already shaped up to be
I'll think on keeping the old finish....

I was considering the "Campange Nouveau" because it isn't glossy, so I'll probably check that out in store.
& I was thinking of doing the "Oil Rubber Bronze" from that same series for the black undercoating.

Hmm. Well my dad does have a sander I could use, but that could be cool.
The red might be a nice touch with the black & gold... but I still might sand it. Not sure yet.

I picked up my paint today. I was able to find the Oil Rubbed Bronze, but not the Champagne Nouveau.
I ended up buying a more metallic / shiny gold that will hopefully have a bit deeper/darker color.
Hoping it will give more contrast next to the dullness of the black.

Two question:
1.) Should I relieve the tension on the truss rod when I take the neck off of the body?
2.) What do ya'll use to hang/dry guitar bodies?

1. I wouldn't worry about it; the neck's not gonna be off the body that long. If you are using insanely, damagingly heavy strings and have the neck bowed to an equally stupid degree to counter the tension, then I'd balance it out.
2. Coat hangers are the easiest. You could also get a scrap piece of wood and attach it to the body via a neck screw. I like coat hangers 'cause you can have two bending in separate directions so the guitar doesn't spin on whatever you hang it from.

Went to my dads to pick up supplies, got some clamps and sand paper... but the sander was no where to be found Soon....
