Go solid state, less hassle and it sucks to run out of clean head room when you don't want to.

Beware of some newer SS heads that get all farty when you clip their preamps, though.
Try to really drive them if you get a chance to test them.

first... what kind'a guitar amp have you is does? If it's a head or has a speaker out you can just get a cheap ass bass cab untill you have a handle on things.

The SVT is they ONLY ampeg bass amp I ever liked and I got it mainly because at the time I couldn't find a mesa to try [IN THE FUCKING BAY AREA WTF THEY ARE IN FUCKING PETALUMA!] and I hated all the other bass amps in the 90's that I tried. It was a good sounding amp but it had all those tube amp issues you fear and I no longer have it anyway
I hate their cabs though, really hate them.
