I've been recording direct for my entire musical "career," but only just moved into using Amplitube about a year and a half ago. I'll be damned if anyone can tell the difference between Amplitube and mic'd amp. Most people think I'm using my Twin Reverb and external spring tank.

My interface is just a Zoom H4 with a passive direct box in front of it, and I use a combination of Amplitube sounds and real pedal sounds. I'm sure with a better interface I'd get some better high-end clarity, but I haven't A/B'd anything.

Sometimes I'll bypass Amplitube entirely and just do pedals. Dirt/OD/Fuzz can be tricky, but it can work. Just don't treat it like a real amp and you're golden. Go by your ear, not by what you think the settings would be in real life.

I know Justin Broadrick swears by Amplitube, and I'm in complete agreement. The control you get is second to none, and for an obsessive detail-oriented jerk like myself, it's perfect.

It's super simple, and I think I actually get tones that are closer to my real amp tones with it, compared to Amplitube. Go figure.

I pissed off my band, because I hate humans and I think I'm perfect\post-human etc. Yes, I'm sick, and in this moment I'm drunk and I toke some sleeping pills.
I'm starting a solo noisy project: Fuzz, Synth, Self-Erotism, Bass and Drum Machine, and obviously my shitty voice.
My problem is that I have an Ipad4, and stupidly I update this shitty devil's instrument to iOS7.
My idead is run guitar\bass --> Pedalboard --> iRig pro (it has, phantom and midi in, iOS synth are really awesome) --> Ipad4, at least Iphone5. ( I tied focusrite Scarlett 2i4 but doesn't work with ios7 and roland duo capture ex too, apogee stuff is really pricey, and the apogee itrack solo doesn't have midi in.
I should buy a valve pre (english muff'n?) and run directly into an app recorder (focusrite tape\ sampler\ garage band mic), or into a modelling amp? When I was using the old iRing everynthing sounds "nice" with clean I can obtain a mic distortion\compression that I really love, but whit od\fuzz everything sounds like shit, like a crazy mosquito.

If you run your guitar into a splitter (I recommend the BYOC amp selector because its buffered and each channel has its own switchable output transformers) you can record your DI signal and also record a mic'ed amp signal. The amp can be a tiny Pignose or any other practice amp to keep things quiet. Blend the two to taste for ultimate flexibility...!!!

if you have the chance, try running your guitar into a whirlwind DI, then take the XLR out into your interface or mic pre then run it into waves GTR Tool rack.
that plugin has so many options and pedals/effects emulators that you can pretty much achieve any major recorded tone.
then with the thru out of the DI, run that into your amp and mic that up with a relatively flat FQ response and find the sweetspot on the speaker and then blend the two.

Since having new baby recently i have been dicking around with direct in a lot lately. I think I've got a chain set up that sounds pretty good.
I use a tube pre (an OR120 preamp modded onto a Randall MTS module or a Meatmoke pre) into my Mbox, then into my daw using the free Torpedo WOS plug-in (which can do power amp emulation, mic placement, etc) and instead of the stok impulses i use a couple of redwirez vintage cabs.

With the Randall i use the line out so I can get tube saturation and just use Torpedo for the cab sims. sounds pretty damn good.
The Randall is pretty sweet. there is a guy in the czech republic who does custom mods for around 200 a pop. I got an Or120, Hiwatt and a very versatile Marshall module.
They are like tube amp cartridges. Who knew?

If you're not happy with direct-in sounds via digital stuff like Line 6 PODs, or don't like the sounds you're getting from a DI or the sound of plugging pedals directly into an interface... Palmer makes great speaker simulators - analogue, and passive, and it lets you use your real amp (just use it in place of your speaker cabinet). Tech21 has their SansAmp stuff which is also apparently pretty good analog amp/speaker simulation, but I must admit, I haven't tried it yet.

!!!!!!!!!!! Dang, Palmer wants $600-something dollars for one of those? That's neat, but I'll stick with my amp freeware and EQs.

Rad. I'm always on the lookout for new plug ins. You never know when the new one you haven't tried might be the one that blows the rest away.

Interesting, the company's hardware products hold more interest to me.

IF the attenuator/silent DI box works as claimed, may have to snag one.

Just checked those out. Also neat, but the price .... just for a DI box..... it's like buying a new amp.
