They sound a little different from each other, more filter caps on the earlier (vert) versions, different power config and the pots aren't board mounted. They both slay, you'll just be able to fetch a higher resale with the early vert input version. I would take either, that's why I said it would just be a bonus.

i think a mix of the jesus lizard, fugazi, and jawbreaker, then produced by steve albini is the best course here.

I'd imagine it was loaded with 6550's, EL34s weren't standard production on jcm800s sent to the US until '87 and I think Blake's amp was pre 87.
