wow really? that surprises me. probably only because im not even close to a recording engineer. whats better about it? what does pro tools lack?

i switched because of digidesign being dumbasses and limiting their 002 to one additional set of inputs. 16 max. i now have 40 using ableton & presonus. they're both good for editing and processing audio, ableton just adds so many other features as well... or at least it has always seemed that way to me, though it's been four years since i switched...

Pro Tools is plain and simply not a tool that inspires creativity. I prefer Logic myself, Ableton Live would by my close second choice.

i dont have a mac so logic isnt an option. i will agree that ableton does inspire creativity in a way no interface has since ive started playing music.

i'm a mac junkie but have never heard anything about logic that's tempted me to try it...

that lil help window in the bottom left is a handy guy for sure

Thats a great lil piece of gear. I love mine. Simple and easy and does a good job.

i have used ableton for years and it's strengths lie in it's looping functions and ability to manipulate/re-arrange a song in real time. it's my main tool for making ambient stuff since you can quickly and easily create dense looping textures than will indefinitely change over time against each other - great for aleatoric/chance type composition... especially when you can simply extract moments that are good and take them into another program for deeper editing and arranging.

it isn't nearly as good for simple band tracking as protools is though, since i feel like certain functions are geared towards a different set of users. that being said, i've used it in a pinch for band demos and simple 4-track type recordings and it was ok.

i do love logic, but in many regards it's just something very different.

This sounds AMAZING, super glad I went with the Scarlett. EXACTLY what I want to be doing...and sure I'll have many questions, so even more glad you guys are here

Just looked on ableton's website and saw the student discount thing. May have to pick it up. Was gonna just get reaper for $40 but the more I look into ableton the more it looks worth it, especially with the student discount.

Those are the requirements, don't seem strict to me at all. In fact I'm shocked how lax they are someone chime in if I'm reading them wrong
